ATC Central - The Learning Zone: Articles Oil Pastel Walk Through Written by Abi Here are the first few steps, all in all I put on about 35 layers, but I tried to pick out ones that showed what was happening and were easy to follow. Image 1 is the initial drawing, can be done in pencil or whatever Image 2 is the white first layer, generally white should go under all the other colors to make them more luminous, as well as it allow you to go back down to white if you make a mistake. I have used other colors as a base, but generally they are light colors first as it is easier to add darker colors and then move back down to the lighter colors for details and highlights Image 3 is the first layer of real color, I generally tend to do the background first Image 4 is about 1/4 of the way through the background layers Image 5 is 3/4 way through the background Image 6 is the finished background, minus the alterations after the creation of the octopus and the text added at the end. It is also where I have gone back through with my trusty toothpick and found the original shape of the octopus again Image 7 is the first layer of color for the octopus Image 8 is the third layer dealing mainly with the midtones Image 9 is the fifth layer dealing with the shadows Image 10 is the removal of excess octopus, I have gone in with the toothpick and pulled the color out where I went over the lines Image 11 is the fix of the background from dealing with the excess octopus in 021 Image 12 is a layer dealing with putting some highlights in Image 13 is the first layer of text Image 14 is second layer of text and finished product Image 15 is the backside of the card, personally I like them this way with the spots because I know what the process was and it makes it unique Final version up close, below:
