ATC Central - The Learning Zone: Articles History of ATCs Written by Abi The History: Artist Trading Cards trace their origins back to Baseball cards, which appeared around the middle of the 19th Century (1860’s). Baseball cards were first used to promote a business, with a picture on the front and the business information and player information on the back. In the 1980’s collecting became a bigger hobby and the companies producing the cards started adding features to make sure cards were “authentic,” which, included holograms, glossy card stock, and tamper-proof foil packages. The industry of trading cards has grown to include other sports, TV shows, anime, and much more. In 1996 M. Vänçi Stirnemann, a Swiss man thought up the concept of Artist Trading Cards. In the spring of 1997 the first ATC show was held in Switzerland. By that fall ATC's had made their way to Calgary, Canada. In 1998 they made their way to Holland. By 2000 the first International ATC Biennial was held. ATC's have been popularized by the internet and trading sites and forums. There is only one rule in making an ATC. The one rule that makes an ATC is derived from its origins: the dimensions of the ATC must be 2.5"x3.5" Additionally, it is expected that an ATC must not be sold, only exchanged, as the whole essence of these tiny works of art is about artists meeting and exchanging their works, thus meeting many artists and getting exposed to many personal styles. Finally, on the back of each ATC the artist writes part or all of the following information: name, contact information, title of the ATC. ![]() Other Places to Trade ATCs
