ATCs vs ACEOs - What's the Difference?

ATC: Artist Trading Cards

Artist Trading Cards are cards made exclusively for trading with other artists. These cards are not meant to be sold, either by the person who made them or by the person the card was traded to. Many ATC artists have a "For Trade Only" notice on the back of their cards.

ACEO: Art Card, Editions and Originals.

Most ACEOs are created with the intent to sell. Artists sell their cards on websites such as eBay as well as through gallery shows and art festivals.

There is some contention between ATC artists and ACEO artists. Some in the ATC camp feel that ACEOs go against the original nature of the ATC as the art cards were always intended to be traded only, never sold.

At IllustratedATCs.com, we feel there is certainly nothing wrong with selling Artist Cards as ACEOs. It's a good way for artists to add a little income and earn some extra money for supplies. ACEOs are a great way to increase an artist's visibility and name recognition. As long as no one is selling someone else's card that was originally created for trade only, then where is the harm?
