Idea Books

Do you keep a sketchbook separate from your art journal? Something to keep ideas in, jot notes, lists, short poetry, or cool art/blog urls/etc you see in magazines? I do. It's a gridded moleskine. I use it so much the binding broke, and I had to re-glue in the text block. That was bracing. I wasn't sure the cover would take it.

Do you sketch before you start major projects? Do you jot your ideas ahead of time? What kind of stuff do you write in there?

Mine's a mess of paste ins, taped in bits, fortunes, poems, handwritten things, post-it notes, pencil drawings, pen doodles, and ephemera from wrappers to tickets to sayings ripped out from sugar packets. (One once asked me 'What would you do if you knew no fear?' -- That one is glued to the front cover.)

I find myself sketching ideas for projects, like this one, when I'm already mid-stream with them, with pieces half or partially complete. I guess you could say I flesh out my ideas in doodles, rather than coming up with them that way. I kind of do it backwards, like when I was in college and used to write my outlines AFTER the papers.

How do you do it?

That's interesting!! Your books seem really fun to flip through.

I tend to sketch my ideas for jewelry when I don't have time to make them soon enough, my book is now full of ideas. And I have a book in wich I glue pictures that I like to use as references when I need them. But it's kinda messy: pics are all mixed up lol

HP: I know what you mean about messy. I used to do this thing where I would try to have 1 book for sketches for project, one for notes, one for poetry, one for x, y, z. But I inevitably misplace them, and up with a new one, and have a bunch of books sitting around in progress, with work spanning ridiculous gaps in time...

I would like to see some of yours. Do you ever scan pix? Sketchbooks are like an artist's dirty secret. Just call me a voyeur!
