It's that time of year again! I host a yearly swap of Fine Art Valentines—little 4x4 inch prints. Any printmaking technique welcome, even hand carved stamps!

What is FAV?
This swap is a 4x4inch art swap. Ideally, the papers will be heavy fine or fine art papers, from mulberry to heavy watercolor paper. Please use quality materials! The images should be hand stamped, screened, etched, relief printed, etc. Anything goes as long as it's traditional hand done printmaking. Use at least one color other than black and white. You may hand color if you wish, or alter your prints by hand (paint, pencil, watercolor, collage, emboss, etc). You choose the number you would like to send, minimum: 3, maximum: 20. More if we have enough sign ups by March 1. Extra prints will be returned to you if people drop out.

Your paper should be 4x4 inches, and your image can be 2x2 or slightly larger. Please leave room for framing. You send as many as you want of an edition or series of EV (edition varied, individuals). Please be sure to date, sign, and number.

You send:

+ Edition of signed and numbered prints (3, 20, or anything in between) Deadline: in my hands MARCH 14, 2012.

+ ... in a 6x9 bubble mailer. (Do not use the paper pulp ones that release paper dust when you open them.) I will reuse your envelope to send back your returns.

+ A large sticky address label with your return address on it.

+ $2 US for returns, $3 for Canada, $5 abroad. Paypal accepted. (nicci (at) evematrix dot com).

You receive:

+ A wonderful number of valentine-y prints back equal to the # you sent.

+ I will compile a website of these images on evematrix.com or my blog at a future date, when I do a re-design.**

I hope to see some awesome work from you for this swap! I know you'll love the returns. My deadline for sending is 14 March 2012. Please send as early as possible. Returns will go about a week later. Stragglers will be submitted back RTS and not included in the swap. If all goes according to plan, you'll have a lovely valentines mail day just before April hits.

**by submitting to this swap you acknowledge your work may be displayed in an online gallery on evematrix.com or my blog. Credit will absolutely be given to you, and a link provided to your website/blog/shop if possible.

To sign up: e-mail me with your name, contact information (mailing addy & email), and I will add you to the list and send you my mailing address. Feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested! nicci (at) evematrix (dot) com. xox

I am a HUGE My Chemical Romance fan. I went to see them live for the fourth time in Montreal last tuesday, they were a part of the Honda Civic Tour. I had made pendants for them. I packed them up and I managed to give the package to a tour staff member for him to try to give them to the guys. And I never knew if they actually got them or not, and it made me real sad. But today, Frank updated his twitter... with a thank you message for ME!! Seems like this kind tour staff managed to get my gift to them and I am very thankful for that.

Argh, the last few months have been pretty meh as you probably know if you read my whiny rants in the Bad Days thread. A death, moving, being totally broke and hot weather have all contributed to not a lot of time or desire to do much art. And whenever this happens, even when I start to get the time to do it again, for some reason I start to procrastinate with it. I get used to just surfing the net and watching shows on Netflix and suddenly art feels like a chore. Which is terrible, because when I'm in the zone I'm as happy as I'll probably ever be. Right now I think I'm coming out of the woods of this lazyness however; I've forced myself into a few MMHs and now that August is almost here it's time to start thinking about the fall season, my FAVORITE time of year and the best time (to me, anyway) to join swaps. I even have one in mind that I'd like to host. So anyway. Hopefully things drift towards normal again and I get get back to my normal arty self, especially for the most fun part of the creative year. See ya.

It's creative hand time over on atcsforall. I joined a swap to make creative hands. I think the first edition of it was over here, in iATCs. The gist is you cut out life size hands on heavy paper or thin board, then use layers of paint and collage and such to make art. The theme for this swap is creativity.

As usual, I drew ladies! Quotes on creativity are included either on the front or back. Each hand is life size, and made with paper or board, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, gel pen, and colored pencil as a finishing touch. Some of them have a little collage of handmade flags or fingernails.

The thread is pretty sweet. You should definitely go check it out over there!

I've been writing a novel. It's an urban fantasy set in a small town in Georgia. Rural fantasy? Town fantasy? =D Magic is real and creepy things come out at night, and during the day. Let's be honest.

That got me thinking about the importance of writing every day, and the magic we miss in every day life, just by being so busy. I just decided to put some mini books up, having revisited the importance of always having something neato on hand to scribble in/on.

http://goodwitchbadwitch.etsy.com

I made a few larger books for artist friends as spell books, and they were quite popular. I recently gave the biggest book to my mother for the holidays, with a personal note. I told her she must write in it. I value her thoughts, and no book is too fine to hold them.

Have you ever purchased a one of a kind sketchbook or hand bound book and been too intimidated to write in it? I'm guilty of this myself. I want to wait for 'just the right' project or thoughts or... anything. It's just an excuse, I think.

Whether it's a doodle that took 20 seconds or a 5 hour life drawing, self recording is so important. It helps us think through things, to see the patterns in our lives, and to just make a mark or a record. There's a reason people painted on caves. They could have been hunting for food instead of fiddling around with pigment, but they made the time.

So should we!

I pulled aside a couple of my mini books for myself. I'll find the time, somehow, despite the demanding nature of grad school.

How about you guys? Do you keep journals/sketchbooks? Do you post them somewhere? I'm also working on a zine called Spiral Bound, with samples of journal images, and reasons why people write. Sample journal entries are also welcome, be they scanned or handwritten. It'll be produced at about 4.25 x 5, horizontal format. If you have any interest in submitting to that, please feel free to message me here. =)

I've temporarily abandoned my mail art (and a serious ATC addiction) for the lurid world of writing. I got a crazy hair at an art opening in May(ish), to go back to school for a Masters. In English. And it was another artist who nudged me toward it. (We were both in the show, of course. You know how conversations go when you're at an opening for a couple hours. Topics vary wildly!)

My first semester is just drawing to a close. I've finished my 2 portfolios for the classes that require them, put 26 pieces of poetry and short fiction out for consideration, and now I've turned a little attention to my zine. It's a new issue of Fat Girl, which has been renamed, with this new issue with a new name. Love Me, Love My Belly is a collaboration.

The plan here is to take the best of FG 1-15 and compile it, with new material, into the new, fatter, more luscious LMLMB. This zine is art heavy! I could use a hand, if you have good scans of your fat mermaids, fat ladies, tattooed fat ladies, etc.

It's all about body positive imagery and words, from letters to rants to essays, fiction, poems, and miniature memoirs to beautiful body positive fat art. Work is accepted from men and women. All work must be body positive overall, even if it includes bits of body negativity. (Sometimes we just have those days!)

If you would like to contribute art or writing, please submit a .doc, .rtf (writing) or a .jpg or .png (art) to fatgirl (at) evematrix (dot) com. All ages, voices, and views welcome.

LMLMB pays accepted contributors in copies, the # is based on how many pages of work you submit. 1 copy for sure.

If I receive enough work, I may release it via Blurb, but I am also considering a hand binding if money/time permits the artist book style to happen. As I gather the material and lay everything out, the format will reveal itself.

Please include with your work:

A bio of 50 words or less.

a URL or email you wish to be listed with your bio.

the name you'd like to be credited under.

subject line in email: FAT GIRL SUBMISSION.

if you were inspired by a particular artist (with links)!

Here's hoping I can get myself back into making art along with writing, and hoping I can help some other artists publicize your work. I plan to link to illustrated ATCs in the publication, as a great place to find body positive artwork.

Deadline is rolling. Until I fill it. And then there's another issue to be filled after that. And after that. =D

(penciled original head by siena)

Multiple layers. gesso, paint, gesso, paint, acrylic lining, acrylic words, gesso, gel pen.

I didn't photograph the start before working. people drew heads only, lightly in pencil. mouth, eyes, head. I added the bodies, hair, backgrounds, words, etc etc.

The one I liked the least when I received it is actually the one I ended up liking the most. Bizarre what extra layers will do.
(penciled original head by jazzie)

I find I get annoyed when I receive something on paper that's barely cardstock, but gesso makes everything ok again.

It might be interesting to try some journal pages in this way. Larger. Anyway, there's one blind draw currently going on AFA if any of y'all are interested!

Right now I don't have a job outside of selling art which I don't get to do very often (damned economy). So I stay at home and clean the house and do laundry, etc, and do art. The art part has me feeling guilty. I essentially have days and days of free time which I spend doing whatever I want, while my boyfriend works to bring home the bacon.

Last year I got a job at a gas station and got fired (well, they let me resign) for not being social enough. Which I guess I totally agree with, I'm pretty quiet and shy and this makes it really hard to APPLY for a job, not to mention get one. I applied recently to work in a library which I think would be neat, lots of quiet time and solitary busy work with the occasional pointing someone in the right direction. It's one of the jobs suggested online for introverts and shy people.

But if I can't get something like that, I don't know what I'll do. I shouldn't really feel guilty; my boyfriend is a great guy and isn't pressuring or guilting me about the whole job thing, he buys me supplies without me even asking (which gets him tickled into the floor) and really likes my art. He even wants me to do the graphics for the online game he is programming. Bust still.. I hate getting to do what I love practically all day with no real substantial monetary benefit while he works. *sigh* I think I'll have just to try harder to get commissions then.
