Grimoire Tip-In Exchange
https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ98Z_XtPLVhrLlde9icGlMDnXeKxXJr qpbzMu63AalanPFU6ak

Trade one-on-one with others to create your own Grimoire!
A Grimoire is a spell book, but this "swap" is a fun way to explore Pagan and Wiccan imagery and symbolism, and history of religions, mythology, botanical study, and culture.

What are tip ins? Tip ins are singe pages with an unadorned margin used for binding. For this type of swap, mat board may be too think. A heavy watercolor paper, or watercolor paper collaged should be sturdy enough!

How to Participate: This is an ongoing thread where you personally contact those listed for trades. Complete and post the profile provided below to start trading! Please feel free to chat and share art in this thread, as participants will be linked in the Original Post (OP).

Keep this thread active! We would love for you to share your ideas, theme interests, photos, binding and cover ideas, whinings, triumphs and results! What has worked for you? What hasn't? What do you want to try?

IMPORTANT: The are Book Pages, which means that you are creating fronts AND backs! Find a way to creatively integrate your name and info so that it fits in with your tip-in. Basically this means that if you exchange one tip-in you are essentially decorating two pages, front and back.

Feel free to post and chat/share art you find on the internets even if you're not participating!

I have to think about mine a bit more before I create my profile! I kind of want one that is themed, but don't want to limit anyone either lol.

So this is to create individual pages that would go in a book? Interesting and fun. Will have to think about this. All of a sudden I'm imaging Pressed Faerie & Dragon Scale books.

EraserQueen
05-29-2012, 07:23 PM
Jud: yes! It's up to the individuals how many pages they want to trade for and how they bind them. I saw some really cool book covers that had faces sculpted into them..I'll try to find the pictures....

And yeah, I think a pressed faerie book or dragon one would rock!

ooooo Annie, I love this idea. I've never heard of it before but read a bit. I would love to do some trading to make a book. Here goes:

What media do you work in?
I'm a P&P member.
What media are you interested in trading for? I'm interested in trading for either drawn/painted art or mixed media.

What Size is your Grimoire? I'd love to do a 5 wide x7 tall book., so the actual pages need to have the 1/4 inch extra so 5.25 x 7

What themes do you like/want more of? Magic is my theme...bottles, animals, spells, creatures, herbology, divination, witch craft, moon phases, plant/tree identification)

Here is an amazing example I'd love the art in my book to be: http://www.leighmccloskey.com/Author/Grimoire.htm

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire? Spiritual, mystical, magical

[B]What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire? Medieval

Optional: Are you a good witch or a bad witch? good witch mostly

Are you open for trading? Ready to trade!

Skyelance

I have stared my reading and research, but the more I read then less I seem to know! so I am going to start a "profile" and then edit as necessary.. is that ok?

Profile:

What media do you work in? - P&P

What media are you interested in trading for? Anything

What Size is your Grimoire? 4 x 6 (tall)

What themes do you like/want more of? I am most interested in spells involving living things - animals and plants - shape shifting, telepathy, familiars .. also spells that control the elements are fascinating to me

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire? spiritual - I like muted/faded colorful. I love the look of old worn pages (think tea stained, ripped, burnt, splattered)

What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire? any time period

Optional: Are you a good witch or a bad witch? good, but will do whatever necessary to protect my family

Are you open for trading? Yes, I am

IceKat
05-29-2012, 08:55 PM
How cool for this to turn up when I just finished a Book of Shadows swap over at Craftster! I'll attach a photo of some of my stuff once I get it off my camera...

What media do you work in? Hand drawn/painted

What media are you interested in trading for? Any, so long as it suits the theme

What Size is your Grimoire? I'm working with half page sizes (half a regular sheet of paper), so the full size is 5.5x8.5" vertically oriented, but there's a .5" margin so the working area is 5X8.5". You can just decorate 5X7 of that if you wish. lol

I'm also collecting 4x6" pages as well, since I can't stop making books!

What themes do you like/want more of? My book is for actual use, so please don't invent content! I'm happy to invent things if my partner wishes, though. Your own poetry is fine though. I'm interested in pages for Bast, Dionysus, Pan, Maahes, Ganesha, and anything related to them. ie, if you do a Dionysus illustration, then spells for mood-lifting, how to make home-made wine, mulled wine recipes... etc. I'm also interested in animals, aromatherapy, simple recipes for sabbats, guided meditations... I'll add and subtract themes here as I think of it or receive things.

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire? Serious, but I also like pages where things are 'happening,' like the hybrid mini albums people are doing lately: space for info or images, but also pockets and tags and things that pop up, rotate, etc. Not mandatory but liked.

What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire? Gypsy-exotic. I like the tribal gypsy bellydance esthetic, so rich jewel-tone colours with metallic accents, henna patterns, dangles are welcome. Someone is making me a cover for my book, which I haven't seen yet, but I requested red and purple and dangly coins. Some Egyptian thrown in is fine too, Morocco, India, etc.

Optional: Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Depends who you ask, but I say good.

Are you open for trading? Sure thing!

EraserQueen
05-29-2012, 09:59 PM
Cathy: Yay! I love the images you liked to, especially the use of white ink and writing in between the sun rays! I will create my portfolio after I finish your 5x7 super hero girl, maybe we can include a grimoire trade?

Sara: Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I think I will give mine a Moon theme...I love celestial imagery and that is still broad enough for people to play with.

EraserQueen
05-29-2012, 10:01 PM
Heather: COOL! I can't wait to see your pictures!! :jiggy: And I love your themes. I also like the fact that we get to research and learn more about the themes we are making artwork for.

EraserQueen

What media do you work in?
I do hand drawn and mixed media. Let me know if you have a preference, but I most enjoy a mix of drawn and altered collage.

What media are you interested in trading for?
I would love whatever media you are comfortable working in!

What Size is your Grimoire?
My book is 4x6, so you'll be wowkring in a 3.75 x 6 inch space, portrait orientation. I like a lot of detail, and if I make the book too big it might overwhelm people!

What themes do you like/want more of?
I would like an overall Moon theme, So Night Sky Celestial centered. Wihin that theme I am happy to see sub-themes like animals, spells, creatures, herbology, runes, anatomy, divination, history etc.

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire?
I would describe it as spiritual and dark, but not icky dark. More of a haunting, mystical feel.

What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire?
I would be happy to see any cultures or time periods. I do ask though that the feel of a time period or culture be evident in some way. When I look at the page it would be nice to feel "Egyptian" or "Middle eastern" or "Medieval". The choice of what culture/time period is yours though!

Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Good, but could be ambiguous!

Are you open for trading? Yes.

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire? (Dark, Funky, like theMuppet, Fun and lighthearted, Spiritual)

ROFL at "like theMuppet"

I think I would like to play, but I'll have to think on it! Never mind, I've thunk!

themuppet
05-29-2012, 10:25 PM
What media do you work in? If you have a preference, I'll do it.. I'm mixing medias like crazy lately, though.

What media are you interested in trading for? Any

What Size is your Grimoire? Let's do 4 x 6, so 3.75 x 6 working area, portrait orientation

What themes do you like/want more of? I'd like to do an "in the shadows" theme, so it could involve nocturnal creatures, spells for the new moon, dark goddesses, things that go bump in the night, etc.

How would you describe the "tone" of your grimoire? Ha I guess it'd be 'like theMuppet' ;) Funky and dark? I'm okay with your own style as long as it's on the darker side. Blood and gore is totally fine, not necessarily encouraged but not discouraged.

What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire? None really, just do what you do.

Are you a good witch or a bad witch? A bad witch with good intentions?

Are you open for trading? Not right now :(

My page size is about half the size of a 5x7 (which most of you are asking for), would people feel it unfair to ask for two 4x3.75's? Or would they feel inclined to rush through of they had to make two?

themuppet
05-30-2012, 09:31 PM
I thought you were asking for 4 x 6? that's not that much smaller than 5 x 7!

catpratt
05-30-2012, 09:51 PM
Annie, yes, please confirm your size. I'm working on yours and thought it was 4x6. One inch smaller on each side than the 5x7 I just cut also. I can do whatever you think is fair so the sizes jive.

Skyjules
06-10-2012, 06:06 AM
BoS = Book of Shadows (http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/wiccaandpaganismbasics/ht/BOS.htm)
I always thought its the same thing as a Grimoire

IceKat
06-10-2012, 05:06 PM
Pretty much, nowadays. Although a Book of Shadows is typically very personal and may contain notes on meditations and experiments, and I think a grimoire is typically a non-personal spell or ritual book. That's my way of dividing it at least.

I've got the 8.5x11" book cover stitched up in a patterned burgundy velvet with sort of satin lining, and matching fringe on the spine side. It laces together with fiber in a figure 8 through 3 holes currently but I may change it. So far it has 25 sheets of parchment, and a paisley cardstock for the first page. Whew!

Next I've got one a bit larger than 4x6" covered in smeary purple and black cotton outside and a black satin lining. Just gathering stuff to decorate it and add pages. It's been a book-making weekend! I'll probably paint some pages tonight or tomorrow. I've got lots of ideas.

Happy to trade if anyone's up for it! I'm going to adjust my book info to collect 4x6" as well, I think.

Skyjules
06-10-2012, 06:05 PM
Ah, that sounds logical, thanks for the explanation!

Are there any pages done so I can see samples?
Is it half text or less?
or any?

Does the spell or chant..ect have to be taken from something real or can you make it up?

Mystical, magical, transitional (good to bad).

What media do you work in?
Marker, Watercolor, ink, pencil

as if it's been an important book in many homes through the ages, in many different places.

What "time period" or "theme", if any, is your Grimoire?
I'm looking for a book that seems to trace it's way
from rural European or Eastern to places all over the globe, ending in my own modern pages, as if the
book has traveled with a family through the ages. Simply put: any time frame as long as there IS a time frame :)

Optional: Are you a good witch or a bad witch?
A daily witch, with a practice that ebbs and flows with the seasons. Slightly dark sometimes,
decidedly bright and cheery other times. A witch for any season :)

it was her idea, the pocket - it was in her description.
But it got me thinking, there are lots of ways to do pockets...and even little doors too!

So, I totally forgot to show off the BoS I got from my swap partner over on Craftster. I asked for Gypsy style, and although the colours aren't what I asked for, she certainly delivered in style! There's fringe inside the back cover, and that part also has an area for doing pendulum divining! I added some silver coins on chain to the front, and will continue to revamp it over time until it fits me, like breaking in a pair of jeans. lol

She also included a bunch of other things, including these witches' runes. There's a page with the key to reading them inside the book too.

Thanks for sharing IceKat, I love the dyed blue fabric and turquoise paisley and this gives me ideas for a cover design or even a cover protector. It definitely has a gypsy flare.

I finished pages for Catpratt this weekend. I'll try to post them soon. My computer is broken and I'm stuck mostly on my little notebook. It can't really process images due to lack of memory, so I'll have to get onto Phrixy's laptop when I can. I did some divination pages. Phrixy says she'll gladly take them if Catpratt doesn't want them. lol

Okay, here they are... The first scan with the fortune teller is the outside. It folds in half so it's two double-sided pages. The first page has a tab, but it could be removed if it's not wanted. The inside pages are about fire divination. The back page is using the moon to ask for prophetic dreams.

So
I think Maybe I am a little confused :3
Am I to contact those I want to create for or do I wait until contacted?
Shall I make pages based on profiles THEN contact the receiver?
Clearly this is my first non-guided exchange ;)

Don't wait, please do contact those you want to create for and see if they are happy to trade with you.
Contact them BEFORE you create so you're not stuck with pages finished and someone who is out of time or can't trade immediately. That's my understanding:-)

Oddbreed, in this we just sign up, you're put on the first thread entry, and the other players contact you for a trade. You work it out between each other. Wanna trade?
