"The 13 Minute Swap" Cards are ready to send!

13 Minutes
(per card)

13th of November is the DUE DATE

13 participants
(Including me)

This swap is a bit unusual due to the up and coming holidays.
So….to squeeze in a swap before the busy days begin I offer the “13 Minute Swap”

You are to create 3 cards spending only"13 minutes"on each one!

Repeat…ONLY 13 minutes.

That makes a total of 39 min. to do this swap.
:shocked:

So grab your materials and timer....and have some fun!
~~~~~~~~~
There is NO THEME…so perhaps this would be a good chance
to pull out those acrylics and create an expressive piece.
Or….you could do a quick sketch or study of one subject.
You can always create what your just plain good at!
~~~~~~~~~

This swap is open to all mediums, subject and styles.
This is a 3/3 swap

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please have your cards to me on or before the 13th of Nov.
Please include a SASE.
International artist’s are welcome….just send a stampless envie with your addy.
PM me for my addy if you need it.
Remember to set your timers for 13 minutes per card.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and sign up for this one. It sounds like fun. I just hope I don't dissappoint. I'm prone to fussing over my cards. Any limit on how many cards we throw away before we finally do some that don't look half bad?:)
Chronata
I did an entire tarot deck like this (only 5 minutes each) so wow...13 minutes is a good long time! :D
I so want in!
For someone who nags and probably overworks each piece, I REALLY need an exercise like this.
OK, OK, I'll do it. I'm in.
It will help to keep things fresh. Great idea.
Thanks for joining ladies!
Love the enthusiasm and your inspiration for joining.
:D
Your free to handle this swap in whatever way your heart desires!
;)
And....if you would like to share how or why you do what you do.
We would love to hear....
it's an exercise that we can all stretch in and share.
Perhaps would like to explain a little bit about your work of art
in the description area under the picture itself?
OY....
I have learned NOT to listen to the hubby when it comes to my art!
They feel just a little to free to give an opinion from a non-artist!
LOL
You captured actual movement as if she were truly dancing.
In my opinion and others ...this is art.....this is what an artist should strive for.
Not to make your ballerina look real.
But to capture some of her spirit!
Which you did....so please...send her along and feel good about her.
Your initial response was right!
:)
He said she had a stump (for an arm)...I didn't want to devote time to her hand, so I left it loose. Oh well. ;)
See, he's the one with all the art training, so it's hard to get critique from him sometimes. We work SO differently though, he's so methodical; pencilling, using the lightbox, etc..., sketching and planning it out.... I just GO for it, with colors blazing. ;)
Thanks for the encouragement!
GGGrrr! This swap is killing me, I've made 3 cards so far but I utterly hate them! I'm IN LOVE with the exercise, it's completely fascinating but it's kicking my butt! I think it's because I use watercolors and you can't really do "super fast" watercolors! Haha! They all run together........unless I use that to my advantage?! Ah-ha!
Yeah I wanted to do watercolors but decided drying time would totally ruin me so I compromised with the watercolor pencils. Not quite so free as watercolors but definitely quicker. Easier to control with limited time.
I agree WC are not easy to use unless you perhaps use neg. space.
Maybe play with that?
or.....
I suggest grabbing acrylics!
In fact that's the only way to use acrylics ;)
I brewed a cup of tea and jumped into this 13 minute project with my Sunbeam timer clicking away. YIKES... the sound of that gizmo set the pace for a little bit of pressure--tick, tick, tick... I painted what I knew--the landscape of Florida. I used acrylics so I could count on fast drying time. This was fun! I hope I get added to the list because here are my first two... :D
I've just finished my last one. I've attempted some pen & watercolour Russian dolls, but 13 minutes is so little time!!! You can't really build up any layers of colour for depth etc. I really admire people who can paint quickly and freely, especially in acrylics etc...
Here are my Russian dolls. I painted them this afternoon and this evening. Crossing my fingers that they are ok, and that it is ok to join the swap. It was *really* hard to stop after just 13 minutes, I had to be really strict with myself. Normally my cards take hours, so I'm not really sure how I feel about these ones yet.... I think I like the black and white one best.
Wow! I am in awe of you ladies. You are all hard acts to follow. Great pics Kathleen and Emma. I am going to try to show you mine. I haven't done it here before. I think it will be perfectly clear where my mind was going when I drew these. Tic toc Tic toc.
gourdhead1997
Kathleen,
If you have them saved on your computer, do an advanced post and at the top you will see a little paper clip. Attach your files to your message that way. That's what I did. There may be a better way. I'm still in diapers here.
Meran
10-21-2007, 01:28 AM
so, the 13 minutes y'all used up INCLUDED design/thought time?
gallery318
10-21-2007, 01:51 AM
Meran, you can tell from my simplistic compositions that I didn't spend a whole lot of time on design! LOL Sorry, but I worked from my head, so I didn't have any reference work to generate ideas from. These were basic ocean images that I could dig around the brain for inspiration... they are lacking in complexity of composition, but it was still great fun designing as the paint was smeared around. I'm not sure I could do something that quick with a subject that I was totally unfamiliar with---it helped to work with a familiar theme. It certainly saved me time from thinking about where things should go, etc. I skipped any pencil layout, etc... just started painting horizon lines and went from there. I used a filbert brush and limited colors to keep me from going towards too much detail.
gallery318
10-21-2007, 01:53 AM
I was lucky to have mat board blanks already cut up from my last swap, so I didn't do any cutting during the 13 minute painting time. ;)
Yea, having all your supplies ready first is key, I think.
I like to set my oven timer for 12 minutes, then, when it beeps, it's a one-minute warning! It will beep again every minute, so I'll know when my 13 are up.
I'm so happy that I made it in time to sign up before the swap was full.
Thanks for all the nice comments- everyones cards are amazing!!!!. Gourdhead I love the theme of your cards!
It's true, I had to draw really quickly- quicker than I like to normally, and with less detail than I would have liked, hence the swirls and the quickly drawn flowers. I had already decided what I wanted to draw before I started which helped though. It was fun to do, and really satisfying to get my cards done for a swap so quickly. It's such a great idea for a swap! :D
so, the 13 minutes y'all used up INCLUDED design/thought time?
Meran,
I didn't think much except about the time limit; therefore, my cards reflected that time was running out. Lol I will say I did one card (not posted for good reason) before the idea hit me. The rest flowed like water. The hard part is stopping when that timer goes off. I am not used to not fussing the details!
I know what I am going to do....just cuz it's fun creative and easy.
Acrylics are fast...so I will using that medium and making something I've painted a few times.
Is that lazy???
Or should I do a quick study?
or something else?
What do you guys think?
gourdhead, I loved your cards! I'm into surrealism for sure, and that melting down the drain clock was primo. So, to anyone out there, sorting cards, maybe >I< could have that one>??? lol
I don't even know what I'll do yet. I have some small ideas, and yes they're acrylic and abstract.... I wanna see if it'll do what I want to first.
this week is DH (or SO) vacation time. He runs off gaming a couple of nights so that's the only time I'll get for cards this week.
ok... I did my cards today... how much fun that was...
For the background, I pressed paper over a thin mix of acrylic paints.. I then tried to 'see' something in the resulting abstract patterns... inked it in, highlighted w/ paint,pencils... posted to my gallery. Now I am not so sure about the fairy who looks like she is setting the tree on fire... it was supposed to be gold metallic rays... but now it is just a crazy fairy...
What a cool idea you had to make the cards. I might give that a try too and see what happens, or I'll just blob the paint on and go from there. I was going to use acrylics for this swap since pencil always takes so long.
I probably should have spent MORE time on them (Since I had it..) but oh well...
Carousel was 5 minutes, the Scruffy Joins the Circus card was about 7 minutes, and the Sherwood Forest card was 12 1/2.
There's another one too...but I really hate it, and anyway, I can't seem to find it now, which I suppose is for the best!
I love doing things as fast as possible!
and yay for Sharpies and leftover acrylic in the palette!
I spent an hour looking for my cards this morning, cleaning my little art corner as I went. I sorted ATC blanks, cards for trade, cards to finish, WIP projects, supplies, envies, and even vacuumed under the cabinets! Finally I found them, all in the addressed envie, with a SASE already inside. Who knows why I didn't mail them 2 weeks ago when I made them??!?!?!? Oh well.
Mailed today.
I look forward to seeing them.
Thanks for letting me know.
WhiteMoth thanks so much for hosting this wonderful swap, as well as to Tablynn for the inked Dragon, gourdhead for 'Time Flies' (the colors in person are so wonderful!!!) and OY for the 13 min Frida. I must say that the returns for this swap were impressive, especially knowing we had only 13 minutes per card. Yay!
