Welcome to the first Illustrated Atcs Chunky Book Swap!

<Swap is already full, thanks!>

Chunky books (or their hanging equivalent) are collaborative works in which each artist contributes a page to each other artist's book. Usually these books are called "chunky books" because of the amount of stuff hanging from them--fibers, beads, wire, etc. You may also have heard these called "fat books".

For this swap, we are doing the chunky book PAT style. This means each person picks their own theme, and other members each create a page for them based on that theme. Pretty simple!

Format: We will be creating 4x4" pieces of art. Please make sure they have a sturdy back. Since many people make their pages into books whose backs are seen, make the back at least somewhat visually pleasing! :)

Media: Open media on these books. Feel free to have fun and experiment!

Shipping costs: All participants must pay for their own shipping. I'm a poor graduate student! Based on my experiences with my first chunky book swap I hosted, these are the approximate costs for mailing them back:
--USA: $3
--Canada: $3
--Europe: $7
--Australia and New Zealand: $8
You are free to do any of the following to cover your shipping: Us participants can send well-concealed cash, US stamps, or money via paypal. International participants can also send well concealed us cash, paypal, or IRCs. Note: If you are using paypal, please add $0.50 cents extra for the paypal charges.

Mailing: Please send your pages in a bubble envelope. Send me an address label, and I will reuse your bubble envelope to mail it back to you. Please write your name and user ID clearly on your pages and envelope, as well as indicate exactly who your pages are for.

Due Date: All chunky book pages will be due IN MY HANDS by December 5th, 2007. This should allow me to have them back to you by Christmas. International participants, you should mail two weeks early to assure that they arrive on time!

The Participants: (Limited to 12)

Methods for displaying chunky books:

A lot of people bind chunky books together, using either a binding machine or rings. Original youth has posted some nice pictures of her bound chunky book in this thread:
http://www.illustratedatcs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=321

I prefer to hang mine for all to see. Here is what I did with my Birds chunky book pages (most of them, the rest are in my binder!):

Amerasu

Yay!!! I'm looking forward to this one which such cool themes and such wonderful artists.

OY, I posted this on the thread but it might not be seen. Can I do blue for your page?

adriayna

Also, please everyone let me know:

1) Your confirmed theme
2) your preferred display method.

Amerasu

I'll be binding on the left.

OriginalYouth
09-01-2007, 02:22 PM
Dana, My theme is confirmed. You can add that a little bit of black/white/silver is okay. Give me a day to decide about binding/hanging.... Right now I am considering binding/hanging from the TOP, so hanging bits off the bottom of the page would be fine.

Also, if you will LINK this post, I will list the colors that people have chosen here, I will continue to update it here.

COLORS CHOSEN FOR MY BOOK:
Orange- EraserQueen
Pink- Kosmopooch
Blue- Amerasu
Purple- Adriayna
Artyiagirl- Green
Shades of White- Swaggertoes
Turquoise- Catsavannah
PotbellyArts- Brown
Red- Livia
Red- Mrs. Weyremaster

COLORS WANTING TO BE PICKED:
Yellow
Shades of Black
Silver
Lime green
Lavender
Fuschia

(I don't mind a different color if you want to choose something different!, also, feel free to use bits of another color if you'd like, as long as the spread is PRIMARILY one color)

OriginalYouth

Dana, EQ said 'orange' for a page for my book, not the theme for hers, I think. ;)

EraserQueen

African Zetti Confirmed! I will be hanging mine :D (Actually my mom is trying to get me to hang it in our African room...)

OriginalYouth
09-01-2007, 02:56 PM
EQ, I'm going to work on your theme today!

Did we clarify mediums for this? I assume mixed is fine...but is it 'mixed with handdrawn elements' or what?

EraserQueen
09-01-2007, 03:09 PM
Sarah: What you did for Sal was Drool-worthy, I'd be fine with that for mine :) (the coloring on the lady was to DIE for!)

In other words, some hand drawn elements will make me swoon..but I also like those paint over methods, for example what Shel and Harriet have done? Take an image and paint over, so that it looks like it was actually painted :) it looks weird when done badly, but I know everyone here would have the talent to do it really well.

adriayna
09-01-2007, 03:24 PM
Sarah - Amerasu asked for blue. I'll take purple!

adriayna
09-01-2007, 03:27 PM
I think mixed mediums are fine. I think most of us will have many hand drawn/painted elements as that is where our strengths lie. If anyone has a strong preference, though, i can list it under your theme above.

I'm VERY excited about this swap. We are going to be producing some really AWESOME books!

artyiagirl
09-01-2007, 06:16 PM
OY - I think someone else mentionned pink, but not me. Can I have dibs on green?

I am confirming my theme and I will be hanging my pages.

And, yeah - I am super excited about the project. These are going to be AHMazing!!

Swaggertoes

Oh, and I'd just like to say, I hate you all...in the nicest way possible.

I'm in for all 12. The themes are just too awesome. *falls over and dies for a little bit*

OY...I think I'd like to try my hand at interpreting "shades of white" :D

And I'll come up with a them by tonight.

catsavannah
09-01-2007, 06:59 PM
OY, can I have turquoise?

catsavannah
09-01-2007, 07:06 PM
I've decided on my theme: Gothic Dragons (colors - greens, golds, rust, tan & burgundy). Texture is good. Please no comic/cartoon-type dragons.
Display: Hanging

I'm going to display them in my Old Tuscany Pool/Parlour Room. I am so jazzed about this!

Amerasu
09-01-2007, 07:12 PM
What do you mean by Gothic Dragon, Cat?

As in a gargoyle type that you'd see on a gothic building?
Or a gothic looking dragon as in culture/music (like the Cure or Tim Burton)?

Or maybe something else entirely?

Oh I see what you're saying. I'm just seeing Gothic as in castles, knights, Pern, gargoyle-type (Pretty much anything goes except for smiling/dancing dragons) (with no offense to smiling/dancing dragon lovers!) Does that help?? If not don't worry I will love anything you do!!!!

Sarah -- I want brown, please.

Dana -- Theme confirmed; thanks! Also, I'll be left binding my pages. I like how amerasu described, "no chunky embellishments at the far left edge" so could you please put that down for me, too?

OriginalYouth

My color list is updated. I really like everyone's themes so far!

This is going to be a great swap. I love the idea of it being a PAT. Well since I get to pick it will be the Elizabethian time period. Elizabeth I, Shakespear, Spainish armadas, etc. and all the intrigued that goes with it.

I will also bind mine on the left so don't put anything too far to that edge. I will crease a 1/2" on the left so keep that in mind.

Embellishments are o.k. as long as they are not too huge or heavy.

livia
09-01-2007, 08:03 PM
OY if no one has chosen red, I will take that one. If someone has then I will take brown

Here's my theme: Sleepers dreaming. Please incorporate a white dove somewhere in the image, whether it be a focal point or a small hidden symbol. I'll probably hang them, so no thick embellishments on the top 1/2"

I got the idea from one of my favorite poems. If you need inspiration: http://www.daypoems.net/poems/2105.html

The whole poem is lush and wonderful. But to read just part 8 will give you an idea of what I'm going for

In the hands of all these amazing artists, I think this theme will be beautiful!

OriginalYouth
09-02-2007, 05:59 AM
I added chunky bits and did the back on Amerasu's tonight...can't scan yet, there's one element that is still drying (from 3 hours ago!). ;)

adriayna
09-02-2007, 01:04 PM
For the backs - it really depends on the binding method. I'm hanging mine, so nobody will see the back. But for the people who are binding them, the back becomes more important b/c it will be seen in the book.

Thanks hon. I hope it's not toooo dark. Hubby thought my goth girl was a corpse. ;) Oh well. I didn't want it too halloweeny. I DID try to glue a plastic spider on the back though.... he wouldn't have it! :D (the spider, not the hubby! ) Lol!

I found some good inspiration for the Marie Antoinette pages earlier, and think I'm getting some good ideas for it. Also, I have to find a nice shakepearean sonnet for those ones..

It's all your fault...I love the square size. I signed up for the zetti chunky book at the OS today too! Oh well...

Awesome pages, O.Y. The backs look great, too. Love the oozy red stuff!

I joined the Zetti chunk book swap, too. Had to be a little bad and thin out my ATC commitments to do it, but I just haven't been inspired with ATC's as much lately!

I'm so thrilled with the 18th c. France pages I'm working on. This size is so wonderful to work with!

I'm sorry I'm slow. Have been working on clearing out glass scraps and plums off the trees, and now it's the deck. that's what happens when you can't kick the SO into submission fast enough. lol
I'm going to hang mine. I have NO table space, and WANT to display this, so it'll be hanging for sure! I'll take something down, I don't care.
Theme? Not yet. Y'all are so busy with other stuff, I have time to think on it.
OY, I'll take whatever color is left. Just tell me what it is. NOT PINK tho. that's a rough one for me.
Thanks all, for putting me in the deep end. No more signups for me until oh, January, now. rotfl

Thanks guys! These are fun. I cut the mat board for more tonight. The first one I did is just 2 layers of chipboard, stitched together. Although it isn't as thick, it IS as sturdy. I may do some of the sets (the ones I want to sew on) that way, as it gives them a nice finished edge.

DANA:
I decided mine will be HUNG or top-bound. (like a flip book) feel free to put as much fun hanging bits as you want, but put them mostly on the bottom of the page. :)

I'm kinda wondering what paper to use for such things. I hope I don't ahve to buy anything else...as I am broke. :P

I haven't picked a theme yet, but I'm guessing I have a couple to choose. lol.

Any suggestions?

OriginalYouth
09-03-2007, 03:17 AM
Swaggy, here's suggestions:

Theme: favorite artist, where each person chooses an artist and does a page about them! It'd be like a chunky art history book! How cool would THAT be? (wish I'd thought of it before I chose my theme!)

As for your pages, glue 2 chipboard pieces together, it is quite sturdy. Use cereal or cracker boxes! It works great! :)

Meran
09-03-2007, 03:34 AM
Actually OY, while I was out washing the deck, *yes, now, in the dark, but deck light is on*, I thought of that very thing. And we could both do that Swaggy.
So, I guess that's my theme! Pick your fave artist, do an extra nice job on him (like we'd do anything else, right?).. for me.
And I'm supposed to put 2 chipboard pieces together? that seems like overkill. ??

I'll do a Frida Kahlo page for you. :)

I meant 2 thin cardboard pieces, not the thick chipboard you buy at the scrapbook store. :)

One more thing: Potbelly, I found a LOVELY work today on Flickr that inspired me to work on your page. Then, I saw she makes ATCs, so I invited the artist here. When I went to add her to my contacts, I noticed that she is on your contact list also! Too fun. :)

potbellyarts
09-03-2007, 05:24 AM
Who is it? I've been adding contacts like crazy lately. It's like a disease, but a good one. I visit a friend's site, like you... then you have someone cool as a contact, so I visit their stuff, and find more cool people... and so on.

I don't remember seeing anyone's 18th century stuff. Turn me on to it, please!

Meran
09-03-2007, 05:59 AM
Not considering the embellishments: what thickness are we going for? 1/8?, more?

Swaggertoes
09-03-2007, 06:54 AM
I do have some matboard, and 300 lb w/c paper, it just depends on what technique I want to use.

Oh, I was kinda thinking, for my theme...like Medieval saints/beastiary/illuminated manuscript things. Does that sound fun for you guys? I'm still thinking...ya'll have got a ton to work on anyway...I have time. Muahahaha.

adriayna
09-03-2007, 01:36 PM
OK! All of the updates have been made. Most people now have picked their themes and display methods.

Meran: It doesn't need to be THAT thick--just sturdy enough not to bend easily. Mat board or 300 lb watercolor paper would be sufficient.

On Embellishments: 1/4" is probably a good area to think in. People who are binding to want their books to close. People who are hanging them, however, could have their pages embellished much more.

OY: AWESOME work. Amerasu is one lucky woman! (And lucky me as host for getting to see all the cool artwork in person!)

Swaggertoes: Just use whatever you ususally use and back it with something sturdy. For the backs, I've seen people put a piece of scrapbook paper and gesso it up, or do a mini-collage. I usually do a watercolor wash on the backs of mine and then add some ink. It doesn't have to be anything that fancy!

EraserQueen
09-03-2007, 02:07 PM

I am so, so, SO thrilled about this project, but honestly, it's going to kill me. Anyone else feel torn between bursting-at-the-seams excitement over these awesome themes... and omigod-what-have-I-gotten-myself-into panic over the expectations attached?

Cat, I loved your comment about transcribing the Bible "while you're at it."

Gotta say, though, and I was telling my husband... it's very cool that I can come here and basically custom order a book of art, just for me. The ultimate treat! And all it "costs" me is a little hard work and best effort. Are we lucky, or what?

Potbelly,
yes, I'm with you. Overwhelmed, excited, challenged, want to do it NOW, not all the other stuff, you know, like LIFE? Good thing I don't have a job, what?
Oh, one other thing to attach to my file good Hostess, please no duplications of artists in the pages... as in if someone does Frida Kahlo, that name is now taken.
That way, my lovely hanging piece is all different!
Oh and wonderful links you've found us coyote!

Potbelly and Meran, I am ssooo totally jazzed about this project!!. It's my first chunky book. I have seen them over at the OS but felt like everyone knew what they were doing, so I never joined one. Here I feel like everyone is as lost as I am... JUST KIDDING!! I can't wait to get some of my other swaps done so I can just luxuriate in this project. And, yes, how cool will that be to have good sized art from all of you!! I'm so excited!

Ooh, you guys are making me nuts with anticipation. I have to wait on my coasters to arrive to start my pages (OY posted a link at the OS for 4x4 coasters which I'm gonna use as my page foundations.) I'm gathering info, though. It IS a research project, for sure. Kinda fun, that. This is a highly intelligent and educated group of people (one of the reasons I love it so here.) Very motivating (and nerve-wracking) to figure out something that's both accurate to the theme, AND that I think I can actually do, artistically, that will ALSO please the palates of you guys, most of whom I think I have a little bit of a bead on, in terms of what you like. It's kinda like a little detective mystery, somehow. Part of the fun.

I wish there were a way for us to see one another's finished collection of pages. I hope people will post their work. Or maybe there can be a thread for finished books/wall hangings?

Anyway, very exciting. ;)

Yes, a flickr group would work. I could see about scanning them all when they get here (so I can scan each set of pages under one theme). Of coruse, that means finding a scanner (right now I just have a digital camera) but a scanner is on my to purchase soon list!

Either way, these scans will go up!

Cat, OCD is rampant in my maternal lineage. While I don't have an official diagnosis and neither does my mom, who is riddled with compulsions and obsessions, my son in fact has a high anxiety history and even some issues with tics which we've had reviewed professionally and are addressing. He seems to be growing out of it, though.

More than being worried, I'm actually just a very thoughtful person and by that I mean that I think things to death. This is completely exacerbated by the fact that I married a marriage and family therapist who can't look at a loaf of bread without analyzing its origins and cultural importance, meaning and significance, to death. I tell him sometimes, when my head positively ACHES from overthinking things, that I wish I'd married a mechanic. No offense to mechanics intended! My point, tho, is that sometimes, when it comes to examining motives and meanings, LESS IS MORE. And approaching life mechnically -- I buy the bread, I eat the bread -- can be way less exhausting than examining the origins of bread, the cultural significance of sharing bread, the high glycemic index of bread, and so on. Just enjoy the damn stuff and move on to the next thing, already!

Also, just fyi, I type, like, 100 words per minute. So you probably think about stuff just as much as I do. I can just type it out quicker, and share it more easily! ;)

JUST KIDDING!!!!!
(So the answer is yes?)

I used to be SO type-A when I was younger. It took me a lot of work not to give a crap. Okay, okay, I do give a crap!!! But now it sure is a lot easier to go with the flow - I think most stuff is "the small stuff" once (if) you get through menopause. Don't feel like crap, please!! Not my intent in sharing. I'm okay with my tendency to overthink things and don't feel any stigma about that or my family's anxiety history at all, or I wouldn't post about it on an internationally-available public forum. We're all imperfect and full of flawed humanity in one form or another. And artistic types especially lean in that direction. I'm sure you're a total wack job yourself, lady.

You guys make me happy! I just spent a very long day dealing with office politics and lots of b*tching :arghh:about all the things that don't work for people (I'm a technology manager and I oversee a help desk. We support @ 35 different applications for 400 to 500 Investment Brokers & their office admins).

So, it makes me so happy to come home and think about making art for all of you AND I love getting to know each of you and your quirks a little better - which are adorable (not annoying like some of my quirky customers). I'm beginning to feel that I might not be able to figure out how to make things "chunky" enough...hummm...Kinda worried. *formulates in head how to do mized media kinda things*

This is what I do: Go around to all my little cubbies where I've stashed little things just in case I ever needed them. This includes old wrapping paper & tissue, scraps of materials, ribbons, cool yarns, feathers, magazine clippings, celophane paper, interesting labels & wrappers, broken jewelry, dried flowers, you get the idea. Pull everything onto the floor. Cut out a 4" x 4" scrap piece of paper. Review the themes, and start arranging pieces on the 4 x 4. That will give you ideas for any art you will have to creat for the card . Or start with the art and play with the doo-dads on it.

Give it a try you'll have fun once you get started!!! Good luck! :D

Swaggy, sometimes chunky just means "crap hanging off the edge." The thickness of the paper itself (or coasters, or mat board, or cereal boxes) makes each page chunky at its very beginnings, like a toddler's board book. If you just adhere layers of paper onto other paper, it becomes chunky, or at least, has some dimension to it, which is more the point than making "fat" pages, I think. Last, embellishments like lace, eyelets, findings, rhinestones and beads, found objects (bottlecap? chain? buttons? rusty nail?) help make these books chunky. I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. Your paintings are so beautiful you might be able to make your pages chunky simply by slathering it on thicker than usual! I think the focus is more on texture and dimension, than actually chunkifying the book in ways that MUST be enormously chubby.

Meran... I'm gonna use the binding method Dana discussed at the OS, I think, and make my own covers. I've never done this before but this looks manageable. Here's the link to her awesome tutorial: http://www.atcards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3605

You can see that it looks finished but the rings used to bind the book are large enough to give lots of air space to the left edge of each page. So yes, the left edge will be partially obscured (possibly), but then again, if I use large enough rings, I should be easily able to view the entire page as I flip thru my finished book. Make sense?

What ever color you feel fits the overall 'look' of your 4x4. And just slap them in the corners, the other 4x4's aren't 'exact' but still hangable!

adriayna
09-07-2007, 03:44 AM
For my other chunky book swap, I just told participants to add their own eyelets, that way you can do them all consistently. I'd highly recommend that here too. Otherwise, some may place them 1/4" in while others may place them 3/4" in and so forth.

One color isn't tough when you use a color...because you can lighten it, darken it, dull it, etc. Quite a few options if you just keep it to shades of a color. EG:Red..orangey red, bluish red, dull maroonish red...etc.

With yours I had to add texture of course...but there was some subtle color. I think more subtle than the picture suggests.

what do you think?

Here's mine for Dana. I stuck it in my gallery the other day but feel like I should probably post here, too. I went in the kum-ba-ya direction of "One world, one family, one US" etc. It's much prettier in person; lots of sparkle and texture galore.

Unfortunately, I need to withdraw from this swap due to real life problems and a severe limitation in my time.

I don't want to send 1/2 effort work, and I no longer have the time to devote the time and care to these that is required. I will complete a personal swap with any member who has already completed their page for me, just PM me and I will work it out.

I have discussed this with Dana, and she has been very understanding. You guys know me, and know that I am NOT a flake. I just hope everyone can understand. There is more explanation in this thread, here. (http://www.illustratedatcs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=442)

Oh geez, I was really looking forward to seeing what you did with mine.

Otherwise, is it possible, Dana, to open up her spot on the swap? So we could have 12 pages? I'd rather have hers, but if she won't!! lol
Just kidding OY, I understand your reasons, and admire you for knowing your limits. IF I had a job, I'd be doing much less in the way of art.. it's hard to juggle all the things in our lives that we need to, isn't it?

It's not 12 pages though Meran, unless you do one of your own. With 12 participants, that means 11 pages. 10 actually makes it more even. Does that make sense?

I may end up with a book anyhow. And NOT because of you OY!! lol
So, please, no one put any rivets/holes anywhere.. still decorate bottom edge, that's okay.
Oh, and Dana, would you edit my page request to say "please don't duplicate an artist"? It was a Fave Artist page, but if someone already picked your fave artist, please do another favorite.

A swirl clip is a swirled paperclip - you can find them at a scrapbooking store.

I use things I have on hand for "chunky stuff". I have found all sorts of stuff on my walks. Smashed beer caps are the best because you can glue things on them. This time of the year I have found some really nice feathers. Those make the best chunky pages.
