Pages : [1] 2

Due Date: January 31, 2010 (in my hands!)
Pendants: 3/3
Players: Unlimited
Cost: Mailing funds only, approx $2-$5 in bubble envelope
Mediums: According to membership only**

Instructions:

Please make 3 pendants for this swap and ensure that each pendant has some way of securing to a chain or leather string of some sort. I'm thinking hoops or holes will be fine. Just make sure they're large enough to accommodate a leather necklace string. DO NOT include the chain or string.
Please stick to your membership medium(s). If you're in the P&P group, then you have to paint or hand-draw your pendants on wood, clay, metal, etc. I don't care what you use as long as the end result is a mostly handdrawn or painted pendant. You are welcome to add frames, beads or charms or other embellishments. If you're MMA, then you stick with the medium you were accepted for as well - collage, mixed media, fabric, beading, metals, sculpey, etc. Again, you are welcome to add beads, frames or charms or other embellishments.
Please mail your pendants to me in a bubble envelope with some tissue paper around them to protect if necessary. I will send your returns back in the same bubble envelope. Include a mailing label!
I will get postage costs this weekend and post them here.
Try to keep your pendants fairly flat if possible. We want these to mail nicely. If you want to make bulky pendants, then you will have to send more for postage! Send me a PM and we will work it out.

Here are some suggestions: This list can grow!

I'm going to make a couple of samples first and if you think they are ok to send then I will officially sign up. Hope that's ok?

I am interested but I want to know how big the pendents should be.

Amerasu
08-26-2009, 02:46 PM
Anita - sure! I'm sure yours will be lovely though! :)

PG - hhmm... no set size really. Fairly flat is best if possible for mailing purposes but actual size. I don't think it matters too much. Maybe anything under 3" (8 cm) is reasonable?

I'm in. Oh, btw, if you don't mind, I'd love to be able to add pins on the back. My favorite pendants can be hung on a string, OR pinned on a blouse. So are pins added okay?

Amerasu
08-26-2009, 03:48 PM
Cool idea, Jud! I think that should be fine :)

Meran

I'm in too, on glass, light enough NOT to strangle. lol

I won't be putting pins on mine, sorry Jude. Even epoxy eventually comes off glass, with dampness (unless you don't sweat? ;))

and I can't sell any pins.. no one here in the NW nor in the Denver area has worn pins in at least a decade.. I have some left I made years ago.. I'm the only one who wears them.. lol (I saw on tv last week on some fashion tip thingie, that only people over 55 wear pins, so DON'T unless you want to show your age. phaw! I say!)

I'm really excited about this swap, but I want to make sure I can come up with the quality before I sign up. I'm going to get some supplies this weekend and see what I can do. Consider me a definite maybe for the moment.

LOL Maybe it is a british thing too, (I'm an expat brit) I still wear them and I am not over 55!! As you say Pshwah to the fashoin pundits!! Mind you we do call them Brooches in the UK!! Pins are for sewing with (or not as the mood takes me!)

I wear them too, on suit jackets!

Welcome Pippin :)

I subscribe to beading daily and one of the articles was on brooches. Here is a link on 5 ways to wear brooches http://www.beadingdaily.com/blogs/daily/archive/2009/08/19/5-ways-to-wear-a-brooch.aspx. (http://www.beadingdaily.com/blogs/daily/archive/2009/08/19/5-ways-to-wear-a-brooch.aspx)

So you see they are not out of fashion. People are just finding different ways of using them.

Meran
08-27-2009, 03:49 PM
Can't sell them tho. Bugs me. They are wonderful little 'art canvases'!!

and yes, I normally call them brooches.. pins are cheaper ("more affordable") versions, lol. One lady in Denver asked me, haughtily, why ever she would want to poke a hole in her expensive clothing... (yes, I know, I wanted to give her a lesson on how cloth is woven of fibers, and that you put the sharp point of the pin in a hole not blindly thru the fabric, but hey, I figured out that I'd be beating a dead horse.. :D)

I wear my Christmas Pins all winter long (one is a stylized tree, not 'Christmas-y' at all) And I used to wear a Slug on a Leaf pin on my spring jacket, until the cheap pin back broke :( (no, I didn't make that one... it was silver)

Judithian
08-27-2009, 04:09 PM
Ha - I used them all 5 ways! I love brooches / pins / whatever you want to call them. And I've been wearing them since I was 12! I don't wear pendants necklaces much as I tend to lean towards BIG LONG GAWDY jewelry, but I love to pin them on.

My grandmother left me all her jewelry when she passed away. Many of the pendants can be worn on a chain or pinned on. I imagine that's how jewelry was made before. I'll see if I can upload some pictures of some of my favorite pieces so far.

I just thought I'd let you know that I meant I was interested in signing up. I didnt see my name on the list.

Meran
08-27-2009, 04:41 PM
Well, that's all good to know! I'm just selling in the wrong part of the US, hah, surprise!

Maybe I'll put the rest of my pins on etsy this year. Depends on the stress load. This show is gonna kill me. I woke up thinking I should start getting rid of all my jewelry soon.. (I don't have kids, and the girlie who I'd leave it to is only 12.. so I'll probably be putting THAT on etsy too.)

Yeah, maudlin, but also, reality. James won't know what to do with it.. he'll take it to some jeweler who'll give him 10 cents on the dollar for it.....

I would like to sign up, please! I was practicing all weekend using clipart, so now I would like to try my hand at painted, too. I have to say, I had a blast! Some of them were too small, so I decided to make them charms (hence my hosting a charm swap). I hope more folks sign up, I have a sneaky feeling I will want to send in more than three... lol

There is nothing sweeter than wearing your art! Well, that's not really true, but you know what I mean...

Lisa, those are so pretty! I'd wear any of those in a heartbeat! It's funny because whenever I wear an artpiece pendant that someone has made, I get tons of comments about it. People really like them and they're always one of a kind.

Oh those far away due dates are such temptresses, aren't they Mupps? They beckon and lure with lightness and grace. They ooze innocence. They rock and sway and hypnotize. And then BAM--the due date month arrives right in front of you and you realize they were a hag dressed as a seductress, out to tantalize and then stick you with the consequences.

Do I sound bitter? Have I tasted of this easy-to-bite-hard-to-swallow fruit myself? Oh, yes. Yes.

Not to dissuade you. :)

(Don't mind me; I'm in a mood, tee hee.)

Sign me up too, please!!

I'm not sure what is required here. I have made one from thick board, added my own images back and front. Then I sealed it with diamond glaze. Would this meet the criteria? The only difference I can see with this and MMA is that I provide the image instead of using a ready made one!!!

Yay. Can't wait! PayPal it will have to be, because they won't give you dollars here unless you have an airticket proving you're flying to the States. (Which I'd love to do, but rather expensive way of arranging posting dollars!) Will you be able to invoice me on Paypal?

Can I get an idea on what size these are to be? I don't want to go too smalll or too large.

Amerasu
09-08-2009, 01:39 PM
Size? I think anything between 1" - 3" is fine. If you're off a little, small or large, it's ok. I think that 1-3 inchies is a good pendant size.

Anyone else? am I off?

I saw this vidieo some time ago over at InkStains (http://inkstainswithroni.blogspot.com/2008/08/domino-questionsdrilling-hole-sealing.html) . Maybe too late for some who have made their domino pendant already, but it's still a good reference for future use.

I don't think anyone has asked yet - are we just submitting the pendant itself or attaching cording? I am assuming we are just sending the pendant in case folks want to attach these to something other than a necklace.

I just assumed that we send the pendants only? I can swing that.

itsamistry
10-07-2009, 08:38 AM
It does say in the first post that we are to only send the pendants.

Amerasu

Sorry, missed this question! Yes, pendant only! No chains or strings required. :)

Meran
10-08-2009, 06:18 PM
I started these yesterday, and ran into a different place that James stuffed some of the signage of the Show we just did.. pissed me off. I sent him an email (he was gone to board gaming)... I should be able to get back to them (the glass bases are cut but need to be ground/edged, then flash fired for softness and hazing..)
then I can paint.

itsamistry
10-23-2009, 10:55 AM
I'm not sure whether to withdraw from this swap or hope for the best considering the way the postal strikes are going on here. I know the due date isn't until January but it takes approx 3 weeks to get to Canada and Idon't want the pendants to get lost in the warehouses (this is where the post is being dumped at the moment).

What do you think? risk it and send out or withdraw - difficult to judge.

Amerasu

Praying Mantis have been my bug of choice my whole life - they are strong, don't take any crap from anyone, and will eat you if you piss them off. What's not to like???

Meran
11-06-2009, 10:17 PM
oh good, no one's tripped up by bugs then?
I think the Mantis is a very strong Feminine Totem... to me anyway ;) I'm keeping the reddish one, I think.
I'm making more. I left out ladybugs, I'm making a few more dragonflies, and I've decided to do some frogs and lizards too..

not just for here, either. :D

Theyre awesome Meran!!!! I think you can add beads and things if you want to as they are mostly hand drawn etc.

What paints do you use to paint on the glass?

Meran
11-08-2009, 09:16 PM
Vitrea 160 are the paints, on scraps of stained glass (I have tons, literally)

now, mostly painted is what they are now. Adding wire and beads overwhelms the percentage, sorry. ;(

Not all of these are for this swap! If you see one you really don't want to live without, one that speaks to you, claim it and I'll send it on.

there are 16 in this last posting... (the clear ones have to have holes drilled) then add the previous showing.. it's what, 26 total? Ask, or it may not even get into the swap. You know, like Dadreemer did?? lol

Fortune Tree Pendants. ( 3 for the swap and one for the host!)
They are about 2" across and tall - in Sterling Silver.
Using Amethyst, teardrop, glass and crystal beads.

Beautiful trees, Purple!

I'm afraid that nothing I'm coming up with feels on par with what I've seen others submitting, and I'm not usually that way. I'm going to chalk it up to being injured from falling badly on a broken sidewalk the Sunday before Christmas, but nevertheless I'm finding it hard to focus on much and harder still to sleep with the aches.

Sal, forgive me, I really wanted to do this but I think I need to drop out to preserve my peace of mind just now. Thanks.

langelbleu
01-08-2010, 01:35 AM
well despite the extended deadline, I am going to need to step away from the pendant swap. Two reasons really, first is that I am just not feeling inspired to do any P&P pendants, I keep coming up with vague ideas and then going naaaa after I think about them for awhile, second is that I am feeling overwhelmed with all my other commitments and I'd rather leave this than do something mediocre to get it done on time.
Everything is so beautiful so I am sorry not to participate however pragmatism is prevailing.

Lagaz
01-08-2010, 03:23 AM
Okay I am done! Here they are, and I made four of them. So Sal, you can pick whatever one you want :)
Basically they're inchies, stitched with fine gauge sterling silver wire onto a sterling silver frame. They're covered with a dimensional glaze so they look like glass. And sterling silver or gold stardust beads, with swarovski bicones or citrine rounds :)
I love these little pendants, so I'm sorry to see them go. I hope whoever gets them enjoys them! I'm going to be making some more of these little guys!

I'll be mailing these out as soon as I can :D

You are making more of them than you should. They are pounded wire, tissue paper, alcohol inks, Diamond Glaze. They don't weigh a thing and they look glossy. The last one I made, I dropped some angel dust and yellow beadz into. I have some done in gold colored wire but couldn't find my gold rings. It's time to clean up my mess so I can find things.

Forgot to post my pictures, so here they are. :) Three of them started off as bamboo pendants, which I covered in hand-decorated tissue paper on two of them, and actual birchbark on the third (the tree one). Then I painted on top. The skull is actually drawn on tissue first and then collaged on. On the green pendant I used a handcarved stamp, which I then embossed and painted with acrylic.

Amerasu asked me to write an article for Art Trader concerning the pounded paper pendants. I will. I've been so busy getting ready for an exhibit that I forgot. It's on my tod-do list! Glad you all like them.

My pendants arrived today. Thank you very much to LisaB for a jester on a file cabinet label holder. What a cool idea! To Megan for the bright eyed yellow bird on a dominoe. And to someone who made a wonderful lizard on glass teardrop (kind of) shape. The glass is bluish, the lizard is embossed black and red-orange. Who are you? All artists did very clever stuff! Thanks to Sal for hosting. I know she is swamped right now but I'm glad she got these out to us! Thank you, thank you!!!!

yup. I'm looking at mine, and seeing how everyone (pretty much) gave an info tag with it so I know who they're from...
bad me, I did NOT. I always fail at something on this stuff!!!! :frustrated:

BUT they all came today, everything is lovely. Will give comments later with more detail. Am wanting to get this on so Sal knows they did arrive! Whoo hoo!

So, I got a Graffiti Love by Lagaz; a skull by Siena; a beaded bead by Itsamistry;a pounded paper by Pamalama; a steampunk looking piece by Dadreemer; a domino pendant by Hogret; a sterling pink beaded tree by PurpleRealm; a painted wood (looks like it anyway) lady by Chronata; a goldfish on wood by Livia; a purple lady with shoes by LisaB; and another domino (with a Tree!) by Megan.
Yay! Love them all, each is very cool in its own right. I'd have loved to watch how all these were made up.
About mine: I used a great new glue, but it seems iffy even so. (I hate adhesives.. if it's too damp out AND ITS OREGON HERE, it doesn't set up properly.) I tested each many times before it left here, but I got plenty back that the bails came off ... if yours does, feel free to scrape off the old glue with a razor blade and reglue.
Now, I have some pendants to trade also!!
I'm definitely going to want to bead up some necklaces for these babies..
