I love hosting these swaps, so it's time for another one!

chiˇmeˇra also chiˇmaeˇra
An organism, organ, or part consisting of two or more tissues of different genetic composition, produced as a result of organ transplant, grafting, or genetic engineering.

For this swap, I am running 2 groups of up to 7. Each participant will be drawing for all the others in their group. You will each select 2 or 3 different flora and/or fauna, and we shall be hybridising them! Thus all chimeras should end up different.

Deadline is the 30th November. I will PM you my address when you sign up. Please note, I live internationally and it can take up to two weeks for your letters to get to me. If I have not received from you by the 20th November you will receive a PM from me.

IRCs and hostess ATCs appreciated, but not compulsory. Please do not send papers or ephemera as I'm trying to cut down my supplies, not create more! I will cover postage. Postcards from your hometown measuring 6x4 inches would also be appreciated.

So, who are our Mad Scientists?

Lurking...I've got to finish my current PAT before committing to any more.
So this would be doing at the most SEVEN cards?
Looks interesting!

I'd like to play:)

Judithian
08-07-2009, 02:59 PM
I'll play!

And my victims will be: Jaguar & Madagascar Moon Moth (I love the contrast between soft and delicate verses deadly).

Actually, at most you will be doing SIX cards, unless you decide to draw your own as well. I've drawn some of my own in the past.

I've had some awesome responses from these in the past. Was just reorganising my cards last night and decided it was high time I ran another one.

If there's enough interest, I can switch it into 3 groups of 5. That's how I ran the first two. The last one I ran had only limited interest, however, so I just combined the two groups into one.

Cheers,
Kat

Judithian
08-13-2009, 08:50 PM

EraserQueen
08-13-2009, 09:14 PM
Maybe she can make another group, cause I want cards from ALL of you :D

ambermarie
08-14-2009, 05:48 AM
She did mention on making another group, depending on the amount of people wanting to join. Just let her know! Let the creatures emerge!

lemurkat
08-14-2009, 10:21 AM
Okay, I shall start another group.

Kat

Me too for group 2. I thought I'd missed out so glad you opened another group. I'll be back with my animals.

Ms Art Lady
08-14-2009, 02:08 PM
too funny! I just did a project identical to this swap theme with a bunch of summer art camp kids. It went over great! So, I would like to join as well if it is not too late. By the way, I am new to the group and I am still figuring out all this stuff. If I understand properly, this is a 6 for 6 swap, correct? By the way I just did a toucan/lobster "Toubster" with my kids, so I could stick with versions of that little character.

Judithian
08-14-2009, 02:14 PM
How fun! I can't wait to see all these creatures come to life.

lemurkat
08-14-2009, 06:32 PM
Welcome OuP, MsArtLady, Moondance, Amerasu! I've also penciled you in, Tlouey, because the new positions are filling fast and I want you to have a chance.

I hope noone minds that I am in twice... I'm hungry for your art!

Kat

Tlouey
08-15-2009, 05:03 AM
Thank you for penciling me in, kat! But, OH BOY, six art cards for one swap... hope I can do it! But I have some time.. the due date is a ways away. I definitely don't mind that you're in twice! I was just thinking the other day that I'd like to track you down for another trade one of these days, heh heh, so, this'll work great! And I'm excited about the other people signed up too... wewt!

Okay, just one question before I choose my 'victims'... am I drawing what I choose or am I drawing for each person what they chose?

lemurkat
08-15-2009, 07:09 AM
You draw everyone else's choices, Tlouey. Welcome aboard!

Kat

Tlouey
08-15-2009, 03:34 PM
thanks! Can't wait to get started. BUT OH MAN... so hard to choose for me... I have so many animals in mind that would be fun to see, but to choose which ones to put together... hmm... I think I'm over thinking this... but here's mine...

Tiger, Lion Fish, & Monarch Butterfly

fyrelyter
08-15-2009, 04:00 PM
I would love to join this! I was also dissapointed that the first group filled up so fast, before I even read the post. I would choose a birch tree, american lady butterfly and orchids, if I can join.

OuP:
08-15-2009, 05:30 PM
Ok, I've chosen my animals: giant anteater, bumblebee and reindeer. Haha! \o/

08-16-2009, 05:08 AM
Updated - great choices all - no wolves or ravens this time (although Amerasu has still to submit her victims).

Kat

OuP:
08-17-2009, 12:02 AM
This is the best swap theme EVER! \o/ I'm having so much fun with these! <3 Tlouey's card is already done! :)
I was just wondering... can I upload these to the gallery or are we keeping them as a secret, so they don't disturb the visual minds of the other players?

lemurkat
08-17-2009, 04:05 AM
It's your choice, OuP. I would like people to make their own intrpretations, but it can be so much fun to show them off.

I WILL be scanning every card when i've got them all, so you can see all of them.

Kat

Amerasu
08-17-2009, 02:30 PM
I'm going to go with a house cat and a ring tailed lemur :)

EraserQueen
08-17-2009, 02:57 PM
OuP: (and others) If you scanned them all, and then uploaded them as a collage, people could look at them if they wanted to. as a collage in the gallery, people couldn't really see any detail unless they clicked on it :)

MoonDance
08-17-2009, 04:41 PM
I guess I need my English book first to translate all those flora and fauna things ... *lol* I hope my English book knows them all

Tlouey
08-17-2009, 04:46 PM
i'll help you with mine, moondance ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_(butterfly)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger

Judithian
08-17-2009, 04:54 PM
Moondance, just type the words into www.google.com, and click on the top left hand side where it says, "Image". For example, here is the link to lionfish images: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=lionfish&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

MoonDance
08-17-2009, 05:08 PM
yay Judithian, I found them the same way :D That's easier than English books... thanks Tlouey for the links!

Ladys, couldn't you chose something easier?! :swoon:

Tlouey
08-17-2009, 05:19 PM
LOL!!! That takes the fun and challenge out of it :p

But I know how you feel, MoonDance, I've been attempting to sketch up each card this morning and am feeling a little drained from the thought needing to go into some of these, lol!! But the sketches of OuP and LemurKat's cards that Ive done are looking so hilarious and fun, so, it'll pay off. :p

OuP:
08-18-2009, 11:53 AM
Hey, Lemurkat! What kind of lemur are we mixing with the kiwibird? I was gonna use that one with racoony-look, but Amerasu picked that one (ringtail lemur). So are we gonna use the same with your card, or some different kind of lemur?

lemurkat
08-18-2009, 07:57 PM
Any lemur you like! I'm open to interpretation.

Kat

Ms Art Lady
08-19-2009, 01:02 AM
OKOkOk I'm glad I came back to read the list before I started. I thought I was supposed to draw 6 versions of the creatures I chose, but instead, I am supposed to draw one each of the choices that the other group members listed. Correct? That makes it much more fun, and everyone else will be making "Toubsters" Toucan/Lobsters for me. I'll end up with a veritable flock of toubsters. Let me know if I am misunderstanding anything.

Sally

lemurkat
08-19-2009, 02:05 AM
Now you're right Ms ArtLady - it's to see how others interpret your ideas.

Feel free to draw your own though. It's a real blast ^^

I finished 3 cards so far, I hope I can finish the others today. Thanks god I have holidays *lol* I will upload them at cthe gallery as a collage, like EraserQueen said, so you can chose if you want to see them or not. I#m so curious how many people have the same ideas :cute:

Ms Art Lady
09-10-2009, 12:49 AM
Well I finally finished my last card for this swap and posted them to the gallery. It was a ton of fun. I realized after looking through the galleries that Moondance and I have a couple of cards that look strikingly similar. I am guessing that we must have used the same lemur photo reference. If this bothers you Moondance, let me know and I will remake that card. I had done several possible sketches before I settled on the one that I completed. What can I say. Great minds think alike. :)
Lemurkat if you will pm your address to me I will get these in the mail ASAP.

Tlouey
09-10-2009, 05:45 AM

Ms Art Lady
09-10-2009, 01:48 PM
Thanks guys and thanks for letting me play. Here were the titles I gave them. See if you can figure out which is which. I think this proves I'm a nerd although I didn't follow any actual scientific nomenclature rules.
Felis Lemurensis
Unicera Felis Coccinellidae
Apteryx Lemurensis
Felis Danaus Scorpaenidae
Lepidoptera Betula Orchidensis
Longnosed Bumble Deer - common name. OK that one is easy, but I liked it and I had this whole thing sorted out in my head about why he has vestigial wings.

I'm just a (nerdy) kid at heart :)

OuP:

Gorgeous cards received from Moondance today. Man, they're awesome! My mum wants the little doll stickers you used ^^ So I shall pass them onto her. And it's great to have some German postcards too.

MoonDance
09-24-2009, 09:01 AM
Thank you!! So glad you like them! I actually can't remember which stickers I used, but I guess you mean the fat stickers, right? I can take a look if they still sell them here.

lemurkat
09-24-2009, 06:42 PM
No worries about that Moondance, she's just wanting to steal them off the envelope ^^

Tlouey
09-24-2009, 07:00 PM
you should take photos of all the cards grouped together in their groups, when you have them all :D

MoonDance
09-25-2009, 09:01 AM
:D okay, I hope she was successful ;)

Ms Art Lady

They've arrived today, Ms Art Lady - along with a postcard from Pippin posted over a month ago. I don't know what's happened to our mail service, but as long as they arrive, I'm not going to panic.

And they're FANTASTIC! I love the character and the technique you use on every piece. And thanks so much for the landscape too. Will leave you feedback now.

Okay, I think I'm going to be fired from work soon. I have been googling and researching imagery all day long. It's just as much fun creating little sketches as it is creating the final image. Each of these creatures can have so many variations. Hope I can settle on final images soon and get them done!

OuP:
10-15-2009, 12:49 AM
I sent mine on Tuesday.

lemurkat
10-15-2009, 08:20 AM
Awesome guys! I've actually just extended the deadline until the end of November too - of course, if I get them all in before then, that will be awesomesauce and I can trade out early. I just realised that with Christmas coming and mail deliveries getting a little hectic, it may take longer than the usual 7-10 days to reach me! Also, some of us are frantically busy working on our Secret Santa packages ^^

Judithian - don't risk your job!

Congratulations to group 2! You ahve only one artist who has not yet contributed.

And that is me.

So you can guess what I shall be doing this weekend! I will post out as soon as they're done.

Group 1, you still have a month to go, so don't stress!

Kat

lemurkat
10-31-2009, 11:18 PM
Right, got my lineart for Group #2 done. So now to Get Colouring!

I'm thinking of writing a tutorial on Making Mutants for Artrader. Could be interesting! As I would need to get photographic references from somewhere however... I wonder if my photographer friend on DeviantArt would be interested. I shall Note her. She has a lot of brilliant photographs.

If I managed to - say get the Kinkajou/Crowned Crane references required (I know she has some Crane photos), I would likely be PMing you fine folks for permission to use your art as well.

Or maybe I should just write an entire article on Making Mutants.

Kat

lemurkat
10-31-2009, 11:29 PM
Does anybody have a bluejay photograph I can use as a reference for the aforementioned article? I think I can find some panda ones!

Or if anyone has a decent photograph of a Kinkajou or knows of a place I get get stock footage from, please let me know. I can manage a crowned crane (headstudy, anyway).

Judithian

Hey kat - a Mutant Making article sounds fun!

Hey kat - a Mutant Making article sounds fun!

You can see the basis of it here: http://lemurkat.co.nz/tutorial5.php but I haven't gotten permission for the photos yet.

Wooohooo!. I saw a card that I think might be headed for Texas! Great cards and a great article!

lemurkat
11-02-2009, 12:09 AM
Oh drat, I just remembered I used that one ^~ NM, it would have been posted in the gallery within the next few days at any rate. It's the first I've finished. Although I'm mostly done with the tiger/unicorn one.

Kat

lemurkat
11-02-2009, 07:59 AM
Right, i'm halfway through Group 2 now. Just need to colour in two (already inked) and try to draw a lemur/cat. Ironically, it's the simplest to combine that are actually the hardest to do! Because the trick is to keep them looking distinctly different.

Actually that's a lie - the birch/butterfly/orchid hybrid was rather tricksy too and the tiger/lionfish/monarch took two goes to get decent.

Anyhow, peek in the gallery to see the three done so far.

lemurkat
11-02-2009, 08:11 AM
Oh yeah, I'll start scanning up the sets tomorrow as I complete my cards for them. Group 2, I will post all your cards out later this week or early next week. Although I want to add something else to yours, Moondance.

Kat

I'm very looking forward! :) Do you still want to paint my Husky for me? Because I don't know what kind of card you want in return. I have I have two Lollypop country cards here for you, for the peacock and frog... let me know so I can finish that swap and send yur cards finally :)

EraserQueen
11-02-2009, 04:11 PM
Mine are all drawn and inked! So I'll be mailing in the next couple of days Kat! And your Style card with be enclosed :D

lemurkat
11-02-2009, 04:34 PM
Awesome Eraserqueen. Yes Mondance, I am intending to draw your husky. I'm sure I can find something in your gallery to exchange it for - no need to draw anything specially!

MoonDance
11-02-2009, 05:15 PM
Okay, let me know what you want! I'm SO looking forward for your cards, the peacock is so wonderful!

I've set up a webpage to display the art from this swap. If you don't want a surprise, come and visit: http://www.lemurkat.co.nz/chimera.php - currently OuP, MsArtLady, Moondance are up.

lemurkat
11-03-2009, 08:26 AM
Out of curiousity - those of you that have finished their pieces - which ones did you find hte most challenging? Currently I'm having serious issues with the lemur/cat. Mainly because as I am quite adept at drawing both cats and lemurs, I'm trying for a more dynamic pose and failing. I think the second hardest was the tiger/lionfish/butterfly which took me two attempts to get looking decent. The birch/orchid/butterfly was difficult to conceptualise but so weird that in the end it was actually not half as tricky as I'd expected.

Ms Art Lady
11-03-2009, 10:14 AM
The lemur house cat was difficult specifically because the two animals are actually quite similar in a lot of ways. It was difficult to take characteristics which were distinct enough between species to make the end result somehow unusual. In the end, I put the longger ringtail on a black and white house cat body, because that color combination would never occur in nature. You don't see black stripes on a black cat even if they carry the tabby gene. (which they all do in one form or another)
I probably spent the most time trying to sort out the reindeer, anteater, bumblebee combo. All of the combos were challenging in their own way, but the process was loads of fun.

fyrelyter
11-03-2009, 12:41 PM
They look great so far, lemurkat! I also had the most problems with the lemur and housecat cross because of the similarities. The bumblebee/anteater/reindeer, the monarch/tiger/lionfish, and the unicorn/tiger/ladybug took some time to figure out. It was almost like the toucan/lobster and the kiwi/lemur just put themselves together. It was a lot of fun, though.

lemurkat
11-03-2009, 04:09 PM
I think the three-part combos are more complicated than the two part, but clearly the more similar the animals, the bigger the challenge. I had issues with "horse/cat" a few years ago too.

Can you folks guess what the most commonly chosen animals are? There are five species that have turned up every time I've hosted one of these (peacocks were a sixth but you guys let me down by noone choosing them!).

EraserQueen
11-03-2009, 05:15 PM
Leopard, panda, um... cat....horse and....some kind of bird maybe?

lemurkat
11-03-2009, 05:35 PM
This is the first time Leopard has come up.

The top five are:
horse, cat, tiger, panda and lemur. Admittedly, I"m the one responsible for a significant portion of the lemurs!

lemurkat
11-04-2009, 04:50 PM
Right, uploading the other three completed sets now. Check 'em out at http://lemurkat.co.nz/chimera.php

I love seeing them altogether like that, Lemurkat!! LOVE LOVE all the cards for my Tiger/Monarch/LionFish... am so glad I didn't have to draw one of those, they seem hard... love everyone's takes on them!

strangely enough, I think the unicorn/tiger/ladybird was the hardest for me to conceptualize

I love it EQ! No need to redo. Its all good, I haven't got anything against ladybugs and the card is awesome:)

Most difficult for me was the birch tree, butterfly, flower combo! Loved the way it turned out but I sure was stumped on how to make that creature for a while. :)

Kat - I can't wait to see the rest of the groups. I love how you put everything together on your page.

I was finally able to start coloring mine last night - so hopefully they will be in the main Sat or Mon at the latest. I have to say these are fun, but very challenging.

My chimerical Tutorial is all but complete.

I would just like to ask - may I please use the kinkajou/crowned cranes supplied by you folks in my tutorial?

If you give me permission to do so, either send me a high quality (300 dpi) scan if you haven't posted yours to me yet, or let me know and I shall scan the ones I have received. You will also be required to fill in the "artwork submission" form for ArtTrader magazine, to which I shall provide you with links.

The tutorial is here: http://lemurkat.co.nz/tutorial5.php please let me know what you think!

TabLynn

Posted out Group #2s pieces today, including the trades I owe to Moondance and OuP.

I apologise for the "Thank you" card. It was supposed to be ATC sized, but I forgot to un-tick the box and it got printed slightly too large. Still, it's a cute print - it just won't fit in your files.

I received my cards yesterday! HOLY CRAP... each of them is AWESOME!!!!!! And thank you so much for the bits of giraffe papers / ephemera! What a great swap! You are a fantastic host, thank you for all the work you put into this swap.

Do I give iTraders to each person in my group now?

Mine will be mailed out Saturday. Hopefully 10 days will be enough time!
(crossing fingers here).

I had no idea how long these take. I think I'm spending more time on them than I have on PAT's. But what fun they are. I can only hope everyone enjoys them.

Woohoo! I have my cards and they're amazing!! Thanks so much everyone, and to Kat for having such a great swap idea! :)

I realise at least two of you have your mail already In Transit, but thought I would drop you a line anyway. Deadline is REALLY looming, indeed, if they're not in the post today there is every likelihood they will be late. I will wait for ONE WEEK past the deadline, no longer, so please PM me the moment they go postal. I have the feeling that yours, Al Fresco Gal and Eraserqueen shall be arriving any day. Also, probably yours too, Judithian.

Has anyone seen Ambermarie recently? I have sent a PM out to all of you whom I have yet to receive art from, but those of you above that have already noted it as having gone, didna fret. Mail is quite slow atm and taking 10-12 days to arrive. I suspect Margaret's shall be in today or tomorrow and Judith's soon after.

Have just received a Mail Status Report from my mother. She reports a package from Margaret Baxter (also Nadine and another we have to go to the PO to collect, maybe one of my Secret Santas?) so it's here Al Fresco! But I won't be getting it in my hands until wednesday. When hopefully Annie's will have joined it.

Margaret - your cards are amazing! Your technique is so soft and beautiful. What do you use? I must get onto drawing your weird little critter today.

Am a little perturbed as I still have not heard from Ambermarie. I hope she checks in soon! She was here monday just before I PMed her...

It's just good old prismacolour pencils but I like using coloured Canson paper for the backgrounds. Glad to hear they have arrived safe and sound.
I am about to disappear for a couple of days. I have to visit my mum. Her roof is leaking and her fridge is toast. Cheers.

lemurkat
11-25-2009, 04:15 PM
I love the way you spell "prismacolors" with a "u". Not like those americans ^^ I tend to omit it from the pencils because it's their brandname, but every other time I write colour!

Good luck with your mum!

Ambermarie has contacted me, so we shall see if her cards are likely to make it into the post on time (they must be in the mail by December 1st).

*fingers crossed*

I'm not sure if Judith's or Annie's have arrived yet as I have not spoken to my parents today, but I expect tehy will arrive soon.

I still have two (or three) to make myself! One of the luxuries of hosting is that you actually CAN wait until the last minute, something I can never do when posting internationally!

Can't wait to see them.

On a different note, I called my post office to get the tracking number on my cards sent to you and they said they accidentally sent them via First Class Mail - not rush delivery. Which means it could still take awhile. They were mailed out Monday, but as yesterday was a holiday... So hopefully you get them on time. (Crossing fingers here).

11-28-2009, 02:23 AM
My cards only took 9 days and that was with a weekend thrown in so your cards, Judithian, shouldn't take long at all. I just sent mine regular air mail.

lemurkat
11-28-2009, 05:34 AM
If they take a while Judith, it gives Amber more chance of getting hers in on time. Of course, then we might have to wait for hers...

Annie - your cards are here! You forgot to send the "what's my style" card, however - or did you already send that one? I can't remember! It doesn't seem to be in my collection, however. I'll send yours with the returns.

lemurkat
11-30-2009, 04:54 PM
Still waiting on Judith's and of course Ambermarie's. She has two days to PM me to say they're in the post, in which time Judith's should have arrived. If it is to the affirmative (ie: they're in the post) then I will wait until they arrive. If not, these will go postal on monday next week or whenever Judith's cards arrive, whichever is the later.

My five are done, although I have not completed Amber's yet. I shall also be holding off posting Eraserqueen's return until I send my PAT cards - which I intend to work on this week. All 8 of them... some of them quite tricksy...

Judithian

Looks like Amber will be posting out individually, so I shall just wait on Judith's and then return your parakeet/apoloosa/goldfish to you all. Sorry about this. I know it costs more on postage for you.

After speaking to Ambermarie and Amerasu, I have decided to hold onto Amber's cards until you folks receive them directly. However, Amber, can you please send me a decent sized scan of everything? So I can compile it into my page?

If I have to, I will return cards to their original creators at a later date. But I highly doubt that shall be necessary as I have every faith in Amber ^^

Mail report just came in (mum rang as I was typing) - Judith, it is here! I'll have to pick it up on thursday, however. These will go postal on friday. This still keeps me within the 2 weeks of closure deadline (phew!). I will hang on to Amber's for now and return them next year if need be.

And today I shall go hardcore on my PAT cards so that I can post them off to EraserQueen at the same time.

Okay, my folks dropped my mail off at work today, Judith. So I have them now. Thank you for your gorgeous work. I shall scan up everything over the next few days (leaving space for Ambermarie's addition) and have them on their way on thursday. Except possibly for Eraserqueens which I may hang onto a little longer as I still have to make 3 cards for tyhe Winter PAT and I'd like to post them together. They shall be in the post monday at the latest, Annie. It's good to set myself a deadline ^^ I have the three easiest left anyhow!

Thanks guys for an awesome and mostly stress-free swap! (Apart from Mail Woes).

Okay, scans are now up on my website: http://lemurkat.co.nz/chimera.php
Just scanning my pieces atm (the ones made for me). I have a lot of Kinkacranes, because a few of group 2 sent me one as a hostess gift. Which was really sweet and goes to show that it was a more inspiring combination than the lemur/kiwi! Also, of course, I included my own two hybrids of this theme!

I will add Ambermarie's later. As I am guilty of not finishing hers yet myself!
