View Full Version : Art Media 101 - Graphite, Charcoal & Conte Crayons - Due June 20, 2009

Graphite, Charcoal & Conte Crayons (if you use the washable graphite pencils, don't add the water. We want DRY for this one.) In this case, we have 3 to pick from; you may even mix the media. Or just do one in graphite, one in charcoal and one in Conte crayon (to make up your three cards). It's up to you.
Introduction: Remember, the goal is to try something new; be brave; work out of your comfort zone! If you don't already have the medium you want to try, borrow some from a friend.. after all, these are small little cards; you won't be using much!
This will be a 3/3 or 6/6 swap
Unlimited players
Cards will be in JUST the stated medium (tho feel free to ask). You may work in any theme you like; be relaxed.. it's all about the medium... some of the examples below have some ink lining in them; don't do that.. try to do with just the medium itself.
Each month, cards must be postmarked by the 15th. Returns will be mailed by the 30th of each month, if not earlier.
Please send a SASE or correct postage for U.S. players. International players will have postage picked up by me. Please include a label.
LATE CARDS WILL BE RETURNED, because of the quick returns. No extra card is necessary, though I'll take it if you insist. I don't want the cards to be late tho, just because you wanted to make me an extra! I have plenty of cards; I won't suffer.
Please make sure you write the Swap Name and Medium on the back of your cards along with your user name, for iTrader feedback. You may also want to put the swap name on the return envelope, so you know when you get it what's in the envelope.. of course, you'll figure that out once you open it, right?

I just found some Conte crayons in my supply graveyard and I haven't used my charcoal pencils in ages. I'd like to join this. I may shoot for 6:6. Charcoal goes pretty fast.

Sign me up. I'm going to try out conte on my lokta paper. There's a great article in International Artist by a portraitist who uses this medium. Not sure I'll do portraits though. Maybe.

The artist's name is Marina Dieul. She has some of her work on her blog (though some of it is oil) http://marinadieul.blogspot.com/
Here's one that shows another of her conte works:

OOh, Anne, we'd love to have you here!
molossus

I think it's amazing what Marina can do. She only uses the 3 colors, but I'd love to know how many shades in that range that she typically uses on a picture.

So I have some new tinted charcoal pencils and some paper (treat from my son), but....
I need lots of practise for this one. I don't like the special paper for a start off, I really prefer the white.
I am struggling with finding subject matter!!!
Meran
04-27-2009, 01:23 AM
Yeah, I get you.. me too.. I may go back to plain ol' bristol and 2B and 3B pencil...

I think I'm going to start doing only three + hostess card for swaps so I'll have more time for one on ones, so I'm done. Meran, we've gotta get together soon. Not that we needed this excuse!

05-01-2009, 04:54 PM
So, should I put you two down, Cynthia and Robin? :D
I've done a charcoal and one of two graphites... very different style than your lovelies, Molossus.. and yes, we'll be getting together.. and you can always call me for in betweens. I'm usually home..
Ashazart
05-01-2009, 05:13 PM
Don't put me down right now Meran, but if I find that some of these types of pieces manage to escape from their cages over the course of the next few weeks, I will be sure to let you know! ;)

It's funny, that given the fact that pencil was my primary means of making art for many a long year, I never tried the method of toning the paper and erasing for detail. I really like the softness it gives.
I did rediscover that conte gives off a lot of dust, and yes I am allergic to it!

I'd like to join, if I may. I have five images ready. I may do more or perhaps just select 3 of these.

These are all done with 4B graphite drawing pencil. Of course, the scans don't show them to their full advantage. The apples and the fairy are done on smooth paper while the others are on watercolor paper so don't take the graphite as smoothly.

Sure Patti, I've put you on the list too! Do you need my addy, or did you save it from last time? :D

Meran, with the way things are going, I don't know if we'll have a chance to get together before these are due. I've been to your house, but don't actually know your address! I think I'll go ahead and mail them. Better safe than sorry.
Ashazart
05-15-2009, 07:47 PM
Well, I drew a few graphite cards and posted them to the gallery, but I am not sure they will be acceptable for this swap. I figure I will wait to see if they garner any comments. If not, I will go back to the drawing board and try something else.
Meran
05-16-2009, 05:39 PM
Cynthia, I don't think you can DO a bad card! Send them in, they'll be cheerfully traded. :D

remember everyone, send me a PM artist request! I'll try to do what I can; this way you just might be able to get someone you don't have in your collection!
Robin, I got yours today too... that was an interesting 'wrapper' you sent!! where'd you get such a thing? and 6 cards, very cool!

Colleen, your cards came in today.. love the one called "Fay". Is that a friend of yours?
All points will be given today, to those I've 'missed',,, I'm doing task avoidance, so the other ones all get done :D

I got Mellanie's cards today, and am waiting on one more set, still in the hands of the USPS.. then they'll all be sorted out. Remember, I'm letting YOU pick the cards you'd like to have.. OR the artist. That's probably easier. This way, you can get a card from an artist you don't yet have any cards from! send requests by pm, please.. :D
molossus
06-21-2009, 07:52 AM
I don't have anything by Patti or Anonevyl or Janet, so I'd love something of theirs. Can't wait to see what I get!

My wishes were answered, as my returns arrived today! I was the very lucky recipient of one of Meran's twisted "lover" trees, Fyrelyter's "bunch of grapes," and Janet's soft river stream among hills. Thank you for doing such lovely work ladies and Meran for hosting!
