http://www.illustratedatcs.com/forum/gallery/file.php?n=4384&w=l Bookmark Swap! woot! (bookmark by Merricat!)
Send in 3/3 OR 6/6
DUE: July 31
20 participants
PM me for my address!
Bookmark Specifications: (ask any questions here in the thread!)
Feel free to use mixed media! However, you must incorporate some drawn elements to your work, let's try to stick to the hand-drawn focus of the site.
Important: you can add ribbon or fibers to your bookmarks, but no beads/metal charms etc. This is bulky, can damage the paper surface of the bookmark, and adds weight.
Make your bookmarks 2x6 inches (this is approximate, use any format you like/give or take a half inch, but please have your working space equal about 12 inches total...'cause, you know...2x6=12 :D don't send in teeny-weeny bookmarks!)
Because this is a juried site, I am now stating this in all swaps: if your work exhibits lack of effort (BASED solely on what I know you are capable of based on your gallery work...I will NOT judge your work based on the work of others) or poor craftsmanship, and there are no other cards/bookmarks with which to swap them out of equal creation, I will return them to you using the SASE provided! Send what you would like to receive! (i.e. don't make six, and rush two of them!) Quality over quality! Hugs and Wub!
You must enclose a SASE, with Three loose 42 cent stamps. if you can, please send an extra stamp to help cover international postage!
In you are an international participant, you MUST send a label with your address.. Please send unused US stamps of you have it. You can make me a hostess bookmark, and I will love you, but that is not mandatory.
participants: Purple = I have them!

I like ATCs but I look forward changing format!
In case it would help somebody else, I just converted the size to metric units: 2"x6"= 5,1 cmx15,3 cm = 78 cm2. I'll probably go for 5,2x14,9 or 4,9x16 depending on the base I use.

I want in on this one, please!
If I promise to draw with a lightweight flat wire and no beads, can I join? When I return I have to work full time on an installation, and will be working with the wire, anyway. It will be unlike anything you have seen from me yet.

I would love to join this swap, EQ I've haven't got any US stamps to send for postage but could you use some Australian postage stamps for when you are in an Aussie swap?
I've not made book marks before, do I need to finish them off with laminating or do they go 'naked', mine will be mainly handdrawn on watercolour paper. Also are they like an atc, illustrated one side and artist info on the other? Hate to ask the basic questions but I'd like to get it right.
Thanks.

hey y'all! Glad to see more faces here! I have been spending most of my day in a gurelling Spanish class, and doing yard work, so have only just had a chance to reply to much!
jklee: I'll add you now!
Jart: Well, I was hoping to have some aspect of these bookmarks incorporate handrawn, but to be honest I HIGHLY doubt anyone would want to pass up a chance at owning one of your unique bookmarks! You could have a tag attached that has a drawing on it, but again, I think your idea sounds cool! The only concern I have is that the metal will weigh more than paper, so if you want to send a couple extra stamps, that could help with sending them to whomever I swap them out to....that optional because I really don't know how much extra your bookmarks will weight..I may be over estimating!
flashviv: Sure, send some Aussie stamps! If you can do some kind of quality lamination, that could work!
EVERYONE: And I WOULD like the backs to be decorated also (not as detailed as in the front, but still with some quality work), and include your screen name and real name (so I can identify you!)

Just a quick question, i have started one of mine, for the back can i use some pretty patterned paper, as i use markers, and to be honest the if i use markers for the back it will bleed through on all the art i did on the front.
And can i put an eyelet at the top to thread the fibers through as it help to stablize the top a bit.
Ang

Ang: All of that sounds fine! Don't forget to add your info to the back! (though I bet I could recognize the styles of all of you anyways :D )

Excellent!!!!! i made one today (working) and i am having so much fun. its fun to only bring a certain medium to work and use what you have instead of a whole art room.
Anyone want to come to my house to have art fun?
ANg
Oh, I've been waiting for this swap! I've got to finish my Summer CAT cards before I join, so I know I won't be rushed. But hopefully, I'll be back in time!

I've done my bookmarks on cardstock and just wonder if it will be thick enough? I prefer them to be thinner than cards, so they don't damage the books. Any thoughts on this?
I also like laminated, but I tend to think that wouldn't be welcome here :)
EraserQueen
06-09-2008, 02:43 PM
Janet: I think one gal IS doing lamination, so if you want to, go for it! And I think lamination would be a good idea, if you're using something thinnish...gives it more durability!

The first time I received a laminated ATC, I was a bit puzzled, but I actually bought the laminating starting kit for this swap. I hope I won't ruin too many bookmarks...
Glad to see I will not be the only one!

Do you think an Artful bookmark will make a text book more appealing and easier to read or be a depressing reminder that Im not making art but researching yet another essay topic? If you think they would have some magical effect.... sign me up.

Here are three. I guess Dana inspired me to the blossoms, although I didn't realize it until I saw her bookmarks again. The blossoms inspired the bamboo. The paint on the palette inspired the color choices in those two. Then, our Emma inspired the little girl. I've had the grandkids for three days. ( I should now draw you a picture of my new dog, Bandit. But he is short and round like me and I need to get to know his face a bit better. He is a little masked fuzzball!)

Here are three more. This probably is a great example of my random order, random learning, random teaching processes. They certainly don't look like they have much in common. However, they are all pen and ink and markers.

Question: Can I make a print of my bookmark and then laminate it? The reason I ask is because I suck at freehand lettering and I wanted to scan my art into a draw program and then include some type. But of course, doing this, means, it won't be the original drawing.
EraserQueen
07-06-2008, 02:56 PM
No prints aren't allowed, sorry :(
But I usually trace lettering or or do a graphite transfer...it doesn't take up too much extra time, and the results look great!

07-06-2008, 03:00 PM

oh crappin hell...
I thought I finally made something that I might consider good enough for this swap...and just reread that there are size constraints.

Robyn, if no one else cares, I don't either...you spend a lot of time on you work, and I'm sue they are beautiful.. The size probably isn't off by that much...
Your choice though, this is supposed to be a fun thing, not a stress inducer! (Especially with what you've been going through!) HUGS!

Congratulations Chronata, you're done and I'm not worried on the quality either!

I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that 3 amazing bookmarks were waiting for me at home today :); I got great bookmarks from Pam, Dana, and Melisa.
The bad news is that there was a lot of junk mail with my envie and the postman decided to shove everything under the gate; I came home late and pretty much everything was soaked (there were about 8 different envelopes from bills, credit cards, and banks) rain comes off the roof and drips right into the spot the mailman placed the envies.
The envie kind of feel apart when I grabbed it; I literally peeled the wet paper off to get to the bookmarks. Amazingly enough they held their own and are resting in the oven to give them a chance to dry through; I'll give them a couple of days before using them.
EraserQueen
09-06-2008, 02:32 PM
Aw, no! That's a shame :( I remember with our old mailbox, the postman was lazy and didn't close it all the way, and a bunch of stuff got soaked.
jklee
09-06-2008, 08:50 PM
A night in the oven was just what they needed; they are all dried up and ready to be used :D
