View Full Version : Black and White Swap DUE Sept 15, 2007

Attention! Swap now full!
Welcome to... the Black and White swap where everything we do is black and white (and possibly shades of grey, if that speaks to you).
The subject matter and medium is up to you, as long as the cards are hand-done originals.
{I guess, given the nature of this site, that "hand-done/illustrated/painted" is a given, but it never hurts just to say it again. Because it feels good to know that it's really going to be carried through!
Note on digital work: I don't mind digital originals as long as they are (and I'm going to sound like a long-faced headmaster when I say this):
1) One of a kind (you're not going to print out more than one)
2) Printed on nice cardstock with high resolution (not crappy streaky on-crumbled-computer paper -- if you don't have your own nice printer, fedexkinko's and staples and even places like target and the dreaded wal-mart operate for fairly cheap)
And
3) Original (like, not a bunch of images stolen illegally off google and then hastily photoshopped together -- everything has to be yours)}
Each person can decide how many they can send/receive: 3/3, 6/6 or 9/9.
You don't need to declare this when you sign up; just mark how many you expect back on your return envelope.
I do this so if you don't have time or, conversely, have plenty of time and want to fill up a whole sleeve, you have those options.
Americans: send SASEs, please. :)
International Players: send SAEs, and I'll cover return postage for you.
As always, everyone should have their usernames and all of that other standard information on the back of every card, and, in the case of this swap, the number they expect back (3, 6, or 9) on the back of their envelope.
{Though hostess cards/gifts are appreciated (I do enjoy textured/patterned paper!), they are never, ever required.}
Sign ups by August 20th, cards received by September 15th!
Go!

I, for one, am concerned that the term "jiggy" is losing its social relevance, especially after the time Barbara Walters asked Will Smith if she was jiggy and he replied that she was. But that doesn't mean that this isn't the coolest icon ever: :jiggy:
You, Jiggy, and Amerasu are all so totally signed up. And if Jiggy prints out something on computer paper, I will have kick his Jiggy jiglets into next week.
EraserQueen

:biglaugh:
I have warned Jiggy....he was attempting to take images of spongebob, Cher and george w. bush from google and create an ATC with the 'embossing' and 'lens flare' filters from photoshop.. .....he was actually printing it out in 55dpi on 4lb tissue paper when I had to threaten him with the 'time out' chair.
Barbara walters? jiggy? I love Will Smith, but the respect factor just went down a few points....
OriginalYouth

07-28-2007, 05:17 AM
Well, I mean, what is he going to do? Be like "No, you need to go look at your reflection -- in your dentures -- before you ask me questions like that"? He was kind of like backed into a corner, a scary Barbara-Walters-induced corner. That woman scares me crapless, and I've never even met her.
I betcha Jiggy didn't even know to desaturate it before sending it over. I'll bet he was going to send over that terrible printout IN COLOR, wasn't he? CHEEKY GIT!!!!
Anyway, uh, as a message to the general audience: this has digressed. Vastly.
...You should join my swap.

07-28-2007, 05:18 AM
OriginalYouth, you're added and, as an added bonus, if all of your cards are trolls, my life will be complete.
In fact, you should host an entire troll swap. Pleeeease?
EraserQueen
07-28-2007, 05:20 AM
Well...there was a little blue on it...and the card looks like its perhaps 2.25 by 3.72 inches..
I'm gonna hafta do somethin' with that boy :dull:
Erm....yeah folks, join the swap!
OriginalYouth
07-28-2007, 05:26 AM
Dude, who the crap is Jiggy? I just woke up and am confused.
Sorry, no trolls for me. Well, maybe I'll make one, just for laughs, but that is all.
ETA, okay, so EQ's favorite smiley is Jiggy. I get it. My husband pointed it out. So, I guess he's smarter than I look. ;)
leahfelicity
07-28-2007, 05:30 AM
Yeah, Jiggy is this preposterously hilarious smiley: :jiggy:
The thing caught my eye, wiggling its groove thang all over the place while I was trying to compose an email, and the love affair has continued ever since. (Though it may falter later when I receive that card...) The email I was attempting to compose was to EQ (about this swap, I think, but it's getting late and I've never had a great short-term memory), and somehow she got roped into this obsession. Jiggy should become our mascot.

Now Leah, how could I NOT request to JOIN your swap??? I'd have to be put in the bad chair if I didn't step up..
I can handle hand drawn, ink okay with you? and Ink wash? Or maybe those new graphite wash pencils.. hmmm.
I'd be glad for my first swap to be Trolls-Who Knew? if y'all, well, some of you would like it.

Okay..I was going to actally drop this, because everythng I was coming up with was CRAP. I kid you not..stuff I wouldn't even RAK out to people I didn't like...
But I think I've finally created three that I really like, at least I would like them if I got them in a swap...I will try to come up with more!
I guess my point is that this was really hard! :D Which I think is a good thing..to push myself :)
Anyone else having a hard time??
What are some of the things you are trying for this swap?
one card I did showed the legs of a ballerina, whose thighs turn into trees, dancing like a Godzilla through the streets of a town :D
I will take pictures and try to post them here :)
leahfelicity
08-01-2007, 12:44 AM
I think that, personally, when I mess a card up, I splash a lot of obscuring color onto it and then all of a sudden it looks beautiful and appealing again. With black and white, you're working with only the "base" of what would otherwise be your card and you have to be quite careful.

I don't like MOST of my cards, I've come to realize that that means they AREN'T DONE.
Put more lines on it. lol
Haven't started this one yet but go look at what I posted for YOUR swap annie.. I really hated the blue one; still not sure I like it. I found out that Froud didn't use my set of oil pastel pencils, I know that now. I'm back to using the prismacolors; seems to be the right colors. Tho the last one is taking me hours. This may be the longest time yet. I'm just not right for doing cards OR it's taking me time to get back into the groove.
You are NOT alone, Annie!lol

The HOME PAGE? (wanders over) I ... AM ... FAMOUS!
That's always a weird sensation -- I completely forget about the home page and when it turns out I'm on it, I don't know what to do with myself. Complete STRANGERS come to the home page! They will see it! So delightful!
And also, you know I love doodles! You are so totally signed up!
Also, I'll PM you about this later, but do you want to do a 2-2? You can have Bird Song and the Sheriff all for the price of one (stamp that is).

I finished these today. They look way better (crisper, starker, more nuanced and impactful) in person. I can't get a good scan of them. Maybe it's the black & white "thing." Oh well. Enjoy...
Edited to add: Scratch that (above.) Decided to add a chalk shadow and then seal with fixative. Looked unfinished once I posted. Will repost photos when dry!

It took me a little bit to get warmed up to using black and white again. These first four got the wheels moving and now I feel a little addicted. There really is something simple and beautiful about crisp black lines and seeing the shapes for what they are.
While working on these, I found that I was paying more attention to the line and shape of things - instead of rushing to get to the color part (which I often think about as the "fun" part)
One weird thing though - now when I color in some of the other cards that I'm working on I feel a little like, oh, i just ruined the card. I guess it's a little like that moment when you put the first smudge on a beautiful, pristine gessoed canvas.

My cards are done too, I made 6.

Unfortunately, the other 3 are the wrong size!!!! So I won't upload those. 1/2 shown, 1/2 surprise. The other 3 are a bit of a different style also.

I guess it's been a while since I made these cards because I made some mistakes resulting in the Frankencard in the last image. I meant to place the margin more to the left but somehow it ended up overlapping the previous (discarded) card. Oh well.
Margins or no margins? Should I put stuff in the margins? I kind of like the margins with nothing in them but is it 'shorting' the card by not using all the space?
I will post the cards to the gallery.
EraserQueen
08-06-2007, 01:47 AM
Bill: I have done cards like that before using a part of the card, and leaving the rest as a kind of border.
As long as there is a lot of detail on the small space I doubt anyone would feel 'cheated' that the artist didn't fill up the whole space, I wouldn't mind getting any of those cards from you.

So, I painted these just before my prelim test began. I was so pleased with how they came out - trees silhouetted in the moonlight -- and now they are lost. I have NO idea where they are, and I'm upset becuase I've been frantically looking for them everywhere (and my keys...). I think my world is upside down right now!
As soon as I find them (assuming I do!) I will photograph them and let everyone see :).

I'm thinking that, as my favorite troll says, they should be completely black and white, just to be fair to everyone. Though I do love that panda! It's lovely! :) I'm sure it'll get snatched up right away.

Thanks for the feedback. I think that I will be producing a record 6 cards for this swap. That's a record for me anyways. Ego-stroking feeds the machine. Or rather I have a hard time deciding between border and no-border (I like both) so will do both.

Alright, your compliments are flattering but don't cut yourself short!! You always do awesome work...I just use the scrapbook cardstock because it's acid free. Wow. Just checked the gallery on this. Mine are gonna be so , um , pedestrian.
I did a comparison test between 5 different brands and usages, white inks/paints, as per pen and brush use, on two types of black paper, one smooth for pen, the other textured for pastel. If there's any interest, I could scan and post somewhere. Could be a new thread? (I'll show this to Amerasu too)

I'll put them on tonight. have been giving away plums all day! I'll begin a new thread. I think it may be helpful if all of us contribute, in our ways, to that thread. New special paints on different papers, etc.
Meraps. thanks for the reminder!

I've just added everyone I have to the front post. If you've sent yours recently and don't see your name on there, don't worry; I'm checking my PO Box first thing tomorrow morning and will update again then.

The cards are looking GREAT everyone! I can't wait to see the returns on this one :)
Ok, so mine will be out first thing Monday morning. I am sending 4, take your pick for a hostess card. All I can say is B&W is way harder than it looks initially, I had no idea how color dependent I am.

My scanner is down, to be fixed sometime today. I'll scan and then send them off. sorry they're so late! The inks kicked my butt. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

Love you guys!
